No idea what to make of this but there's a Newspapers.com article from December 1988 about a "Teddy Lynn Ellis" getting a speeding ticket in a Midwest/Great Plains region state.
I won't mention the location because for all we know there could be more than one Teddy Lynn Ellis in the US. However aside from that 1988 speeding ticket reference and the Teddy Lynn Ellis that's a fugitive out of Oklahoma, no one else comes up under that name.
But if google the name, you will get a reference to someone in the dentistry business. I'm pretty sure that the fugitive Teddy Ellis would not be working as a dentist, so I'm very certain that guy is not him.

I have read articles indicating that police have received information that Ellis may be dead. Anyone know what that information is?

I can't find anything about that but after 30 plus years on the run with at least no publicly promising leads it seems logical to think there is a high possibility Ellis may be deceased by now.

The only obvious death would have been him being killed by a motorcycle gang, as I have read he had ties to one. Some motorcycle gangs are still violent, but they were much more violent in the 70s and 80s. Plus, I doubt anyone would want a bullseye on their back from a motorcycle gang, so I doubt there will be many, if any, informants coming forward about what happened to him.
