Spring B-Ball Turns Ugly
Huntingburg, In. cops are looking for three men in connection with a drive-by shooting and murder in their town.
Police in the southern Indiana say that the confrontation started in a city park, during a seemingly harmless basketball game on one spring evening.
Investigators say that several El Salvadorian men, all with ties to the violent street gang MS-13, were playing basketball on a public court at around 6:30 p.m. on April 18th, 2000.
Witnesses told cops that words were exchanged with two Mexican males near the court. The heated argument escalated to yelling, curse words and finally obscene gestures were exchanged.
Detectives say what happened next went well above and beyond a simple argument.
Deadly Drive-By
Detectives say Ledezma, his friends Milton Prado, Jose Hernandez and Javier Sandoval-Flores all headed for their car.
Before getting in, investigators say that Sandoval-Flores pulled a shotgun from the trunk of the car and handed it to Jose Hernandez.
According to eyewitnesses, Juan Ledezma sat in the driver's seat and Hernandez joined him in the front seat. They say that Prado and Sandoval-Flores sat in the back seat.
Cops say that the El Salvadorians followed the two Mexican men in their car to a home on Main Street. Investigators believe they first scoped out the back of the house and did not see anyone. Then, witnesses told police that the car drove around to the front of the house and they saw two men standing on the front porch.
Witnesses told police they saw the car slow to a halt and watched as "Duke" Hernandez lowered the front passenger window of the car. They say he aimed the shotgun at the men on the front porch.
Investigators say that Hernandez fired one shot before the car drove off.
30-year-old Cisto Rios was standing on the porch. He was shot in the left side of his lower back. Cisto was pronounced dead about an hour later at a local hospital.
Three Fugitives On The Run
Huntingburg Police had an uphill battle in solving this crime. They say that a language barrier was keeping them from crucial eyewitness information. The Indiana State Police came to their rescue and a Spanish-speaking investigator gathered eyewitness accounts to pinpoint what happened.
Because of those accounts, the murder weapon and vehicle used in the shooting were recovered. Also, four men were charged in the homicide. Milton Prado was picked up shortly after the murder.
In September of 2001, Prado was sentenced to 20 years for his role in Cisto's murder. Still, three fugitives remain on the run in the case. Along with Juan "Cayulo" Ledezma, police are looking for Jose "Duke" Hernandez and Javier "Chito" Sandoval-Flores.
Cops say all of the fugitives are either members or associates of the violent street gang Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13. They fear the gang is facilitating the fugitives' flights from prosecution. Investigators warn that Hernandez, Sandoval-Flores and Ledezma are all armed and dangerous.
Thoughts? This case was a web-exclusive case on AMW's old website. Three of the four men would be captured, including Javier "Chito" Sandoval Flores as direct capture #955. However, as far as I know, Ledezma remains at large as of this posting date. (6/22/2015).
