Modesto, California police are still looking for the alleged trigger man in an attack and murder involving rival gang members.
The group of 10 people is alleged to have been involved in the beating, stabbing and shooting of 20-year-old Erick Gomez in the 2400 block of Vera Cruz on February 14th, 2013. During the stabbing, the suspects yelled Sureño gang challenges, according to a criminal complaint.
The Sureño gang members met at a nearby park to "plan and prepare for retaliation against Norteño gang members for acts of violence perpetrated on Sureño gang members," the complaint reads.
As they drove around Modesto in several vehicles, the suspects questioned potential victims about their gang affiliation by asking if they "bang," flashed gang signs at perceived Norteño gang members and confronted perceived Norteño gang members by referring to them by the slur "buster."
Police would soon round up all nine suspects except Barocio- the accused shooter. One of the suspects, a 17-year old girl, was somehow stabbed herself during the attack.
Barocio now has a $2 million warrant out for his arrest and thanks to a gang enhancement charge, faces 50-years-to-life once he's finally in court.
Slightly more than a year before Gomez was killed, two other documented Norteño gang members were shot and killed in front of the same Vera Cruz fourplex.
Investigators said they don't know if there is any connection between the two cases. But since then, graffiti on the back wall of a business across the street in the Coffee Plaza Shopping Center has foreshadowed the violence. Gang graffiti eulogizing deceased gang members had been crossed out, which, according to one official, is the ultimate sign of disrespect.
Thoughts? The reason I'm bumping this up is that there have been updates. A three-month trial ended in January with a jury unable to reach a verdict for any of the accounted for defendants in this case. Plea deals are expected to be discussed with some, but not, all defendants.
Obviously you hear that and you wonder what the chances of convicting Barocio are. But I am assuming since police must have some evidence to say he's the trigger man, the DA probably has a better case than they do for the other nine defendants. When you have so many people involved in a case, it's hard to say who did what and prove witnesses could account for so many people.
This death was brutal, even for a rival gang member. And while in no way excusing what happened to Erick Gomez, while in most gang cases I would have more sympathy towards innocent bystanders caught in crossfire, the problem with this case is these gangs had apparently been terrorizing this Modesto neighborhood with the constant violence. How can anyone enjoying going to that shopping plaza knowing there's a graffiti wall that's the center of gang activity? Heck, Erick Gomez's murder was on Valentine's Day so couples had to put up with that if they were anywhere near the area. Capturing a guy like Barocio might help give the neighborhood some peace of mind.
