Marco Garcia, wanted for the alleged murder of a local neighborhood handyman, was aired on the November 5th, 2005 episode of America's Most Wanted. Below is the archive description of the case:
A Handyman To The Rescue
Bobby Wayne Vanatta, 32, and his wife Teresa had been married for eight years. Bobby worked as a tree surgeon, but had a knack for fixing things around the house.
Teresa says that Bobby always went out of his way to help people, so when a friend of his needed some work done on her home, Bobby gladly volunteered. Teresa says the woman, a single mom, had known Bobby for years and was grateful for Bobby's assistance. Teresa says Bobby did some painting for the woman, replaced her roof, and was adding a wall to her home.
Bobby did his best to help the woman, but Teresa says every time Bobby thought he was finished, the woman needed something else done. Teresa says when it came to the point where Bobby needed money and more time to continue the work, he stopped fixing things for her.
A Walk To The Store Turns Deadly
Teresa says on December 14, 2003, Bobby decided to take a walk to the corner store while Teresa cleaned the house. Around 11:00 a.m., Teresa says the phone rang. When she picked it up, it was her friend down the street. She wanted to know if Teresa had heard the gunshots in the alleyway.
Teresa had the vacuum running so she didn't hear anything. Teresa says she went outside to see what was going on. There was a group of people surrounding a body in the middle of the alley.
Teresa never thought the person injured was anyone that she knew, until a woman told her that the man had a denim jacket with an Indian priest on the top. Teresa says her heart stopped. She immediately knew that the man dead in the alley was her Bobby. Teresa rushed to his side, but it was too late, Bobby was dead.
Gunman On The Run
Through an investigation, police learned that Marco Antonio Ocampo Garcia was the man that shot Bobby and left him to die. Autopsy reports reveal that Garcia shot Bobby eight times, seven of them in the face. Police say Bobby didn't have a chance.
So what happened? Police say that Garcia was friends with the woman whose house Bobby was fixing. Police believe, as does Teresa, that Garcia shot Bobby because he hadn't finished the work on the woman's house as promised. A high price to pay for trying to help a friend in need.
Police say that Garcia could be anywhere, but has ties to Mexico.
Thoughts? Obviously, Garcia is not rational based on this alleged motive. If you're unhappy with handyman work done at your friend's place either suggest they go to a claims court or let your friend handle things herself. To murder a guy over it is- as an understatement- completely uncalled for.
The AMW archive and Nashville PD page give completely different stats for Garcia. AMW's 2012 archive has him as 32 years old. Nashville PD has him where he'd be 51 today. He's also listed as 5'7 on Nashville PD's page, but 5'11 on AMW, and there is a 50 lb weight difference as well. If anyone can contact our site that can give us the most accurate information possible, it would be much appreciated.
