Antonio "El Diablo" Riano, wanted as the result of a deadly bar brawl, was broadcast on the April 28th, 2005 edition of America's Most Wanted radio. Below is the archive description of the case:
A Bar Brawl Turns Deadly
he Round House bar is located in a Hispanic community in Hamilton, Ohio. It's a place where locals go to chat with friends, to hang out, and to play video games. But on December 19, 2004, the patrons of the Round House got more than just a shot of tequila and some laughs.
Police say around 2:20 p.m. shots were fired outside the bar. The patrons inside were shaken and afraid to go see what happened. When police arrived they found a forty year old man lying face down on the sidewalk. He had been shot in the head.
A Trail Left Behind
Police interviewed the people inside the bar and were able to identify the dead man as Benjamin Becerra, 25, from Hamilton. Police say Benjamin came to the United States 7 years ago. He lived in Washington state for a couple of years and then moved to Hamilton to be near his family. Police say Benjamin worked as a brick-layer and was liked by many.
When police dug deeper into the murder, they discovered that Benjamin had been in a bar brawl a few weeks before.
The barmaid at the Round House told police on the day of the shooting Benjamin was hanging out with some family members in the bar. When the manager noticed Benjamin, he told the barmaid to kick him out, since he had been involved in a brawl there the week before.
Police say the barmaid asked Benjamin to leave, and that's when a man known as "El Diablo" stepped in.
The barmaid told police she wasn't sure why El Diablo got involved, except maybe to help her. Police say El Diablo and Benjamin got into an argument and were asked to take it outside. The barmaid told police the two men left and then minutes later gun shots were heard.
Police now believed that the fight with El Diablo had turned deadly. But they didn't know their suspect's real name.
Through their investigation, police recovered a surveillance tape from the bar. It would be their first big break. Police discovered that Benjamin's murder was caught on the tape and so was the man they believed to be El Diablo. Police used the surveillance tape to identify Antonio Riano as their suspect.
Police raided Riano's apartment, but there was no sign of him. Police searched the apartment and found a Wal-Mart receipt for gun ammunition. Police went to the Wal-Mart and looked at the store surveillance. Police say Riano wasn't very good at covering his tracks. The store surveillance showed Riano purchasing the bullets police believe he used to kill Benjamin.
Alleged Murderer On The Run
Police had everything they could ask for except a murder weapon-- but that changed very quickly. Riano's landlord called police and told them to come back to the apartment because he had found something that may interest them. When police arrived at Riano's apartment for the second time, they discovered a secret compartment in the kitchen floor. When they opened the hatch, they found the gun with the bullets right next to it.
Police had everything the needed to arrrest Riano, but they couldn't find him.
Police say Riano has been on the run since December 19, 2004. He has family in New Jersey and ties to Mexico so he could be anywhere.
Thoughts? I saw an article claiming a fugitive "weapons expert" named Antonio Riano could be in Australia. However, it didn't say anything about murder so it could have been a guy with the same name.
One would think Riano is either in Mexico or New Jersey since that's where his family's from.
