The Jane Doe Case that has now come to be known as the "Nation River Lady" has been one of Canada's biggest unsolved mysteries for the past four decades.
On May 3, 1975, a Jane Doe was found floating face down in the Nation River about 100 yards from the Highway 417 bridge. The Nation River is west of Casselman, Ontario and just thirty five miles east of Ottawa. She was wearing only a light blue undershirt or body suit, pulled up to her shoulders. A man's necktie had been used to tie her wrists and two more to tie her ankles. One of these ties was known as a ‘Canadian Tie’ and had three Canadian emblems on a navy blue background. The necktie was made in Montreal and sold by various stores in the province of Quebec and in the eastern part of Ontario.
There were two fringed, green cloths around the Jane Doe's head (one of them a tea towel printed with an old Irish/Gaelic blessing), and a distinctive black plastic-covered co-axial cable had been tightened around her neck. This cable was the type used in cable television hook-ups and there was a splatter of gray paint on it. Investigators learned that the cable was manufactured in Renfrew, Ontario and distributed in the Ottawa, Hull, Montreal and Brockville areas. They estimate that she may have been strangled as early as the summer or early fall of 1974 and thrown into the river.
The "Nation River Lady" was Caucasian about between 25 and 50 years old, 5’2” to 5'3” tall and weighed about 100 pounds. Her hair was shoulder length and brown (but had recently been dyed a reddish blonde) and my eyes were blue. She had extensive dental work – including partial upper and lower dentures – and had also had her appendix removed.
Thoughts? It should be noted investigators also believe the Nation River Lady never had children. The extensive dental work is an interesting aspect. I know Canada's not like America with expensive health care, but someone was around for her or she was seeing dentists on her own so she wasn't off the map entirely.
I realize this case is old, but with the 40-year anniversary of this mystery, I thought it would be a good time to post it.
