A Waking Nightmare
On June 8, 2001, police in Sarasota, Fla., came across a very disturbing case: The day before, a 15-year-old boy was sexually molested while sleeping, allegedly by somebody he knew. However, investigators were not surprised when they identified 40-year-old Garth A. Malloy as the attacker since he was a registered sex offender.
Police say Malloy was self-employed and owned some properties that he would later rent. They also say that the young victim and Malloy were acquaintances and that his parents knew him. That's why when Malloy asked his victim to spend the night at his house, the teenager didn't hesitate.
According to police, Malloy molested his sleeping victim around 3:30 a.m. on June 7, 2001. The boy woke up, but filled with fear, decided to pretend that he was still asleep, and to bear the attack in silence until the next day when he told his story to the Sarasota police.
Cops: Suspect Didn't Learn From Past Experiences
But that wasn't the first time police say Malloy let his horrible urges get the best of him. According to police, Malloy has a long history of befriending young kids and then molesting them, which goes back to 1984, when he pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct on a child in Mobile, Ala.
Six years later, Malloy was involved in another incident. This one happened in New Jersey where police say Malloy befriended some kids at a beach and invited them to the house he was renting to watch "The Simpsons." But instead, according to police, Malloy gave them alcohol. Police say that after some beers, one of the boys left the house to get some fresh air. Malloy followed him and then touched him inappropriately. When the boy's friends found out about the incident, they decided to leave the house. Malloy was ultimately found guilty on several counts, including sexual assault on a child. He was sentenced to nine months in jail and four years of probation.
But that was not enough for Malloy, who in that same year pleaded no contest to lewd and lascivious acts on a child and received five years of probation for molesting a 10-year-old.
Police also say Malloy has an alcohol problem which has been linked to some of his crimes. They also say he may be attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Even though they don't know exactly where Garth Malloy may be, they believe that he travels between Fairhope, Ala., and Sarasota regularly.
Thoughts? Considering Malloy couldn't stay away from his family initially, I am surprised it has taken over a decade to find him. I think what also makes him difficult to nab is that he seems to travel between Southern states besides staying in one location.
