Chuy Canales is a fugitive well known to AMW viewers- and someone John Walsh obviously wants to capture desperately. Chuy Canales' live-in girlfriend, Lucy Preciado, was tired of him smoking weed, playing videos, and not helping out in any form. Eventually it culminated in a nasty fight in which Canales impaled Preciado with a sword in front of her 9-year old daughter and her younger brother The daughter, Marina, bravely called 911 and John Walsh interviewed her himself, and later named Canales his #2 fugitive of 2009. Marina was interviewed again as a 13-year old girl on Lifetime last year and Canales was once again briefly mentioned in a summer airing when John Walsh mentioned Marina had wrote to him because it was the 4-year anniversary of her mother's death. The closest authorities ever came to catching Canales was on July 23, 2008, a month after the murder when they just missed him in Chaparral, New Mexico. Authorities believed at the time Canales was trying to make his way to his home country of El Salvador. This means the recent addition of another Salvadoran, Edwin Rivera Gracias, may have significant implications as to the chances of capturing Canales should he have made his way there. All I know is this. Canales was my #1 fugitive of 2009. He's on my personal Dirty Dozen. I get really angry when I think about the fact he's still on the run. Marina Preciado is a strong girl but she will be scarred for life because of what she saw that June day. I hope Canales' next airing will be his last. www.abqjournal.com/main/2008/07/23/abqnewsseeker/updated-at-615am-calif-murder-suspect-eludes-lawmen-in-n-m.htmlwww.amw.com/fugitives/case.cfm?id=62974Edit: Jesus "Chuy" Canales has been captured in Jalisco, Mexico!! abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=news/local/los_angeles&id=9328515

This doesn't entirely have to do with Chuy but a fugitive wanted for a robbery/homicide in Albuquerque has been arrested in El Salvador. The article stated extradition may take up to two months, but that obviously is no big deal as long as he's extradited. While I know each case is different, I am hoping this is a positive sign that Canales can be nabbed if he managed to successfully flee to El Salvador: www.kob.com/article/stories/S3161579.shtml?cat=504

I don't mean this as an insult as I enjoy participating in your fugitive face-off, but I could care less about the fact he won't be in it anymore! I'm just so happy he's been caught!
I am doing cartwheels I am so happy! My dirty dozen has stayed the same for a while and my #1's NEVER get caught. A member of my Dirty Dozen and my personal #1 of 2009 is caught!
Finally! Justice!

P.S. Glad he wound up in Mexico. Would have been harder to get him in El Salvador.

And I think it should be noted that this appears indirect, but with there being uncertainty as to whether or not anyone on AMW is even on staff anymore, I'm not sure it would be reflected even if it was direct. (The same way operations seemed to cease after the 2011 Fox cancellation and a bunch of direct captures were accounted for a few months later post-Lifetime news).
Every fugitive from now on I'm assuming will be technically indirect for the time being (but I'd love to be pleasantly surprised), but in no way does that take away from this massive and great breaking news.

We have our first photo of Canales in a prison outfit and a link to a video of Canales's court arraignment today. It's always interesting to me to see how a high-profile fugitive behaves after they're caught, or what they say. For example, last year we saw Jose Saenz laugh and say "not guilty" while seen in custody. Canales, however, didn't seem to say much, and his demeanor seemed stoic and unemotional. Fitting for a cold-blooded killer. ktla.com/2013/11/18/man-arrested-in-girlfriends-2008-sword-slaying-due-in-court/#axzz2l4EdR0Lc

It always amazes me what fugitives do to their appearance while on the run. Some, like Charles Brunson and Desiree Lingo-Perkins, lose weight to alter their appearance (I personally was shocked at how skinny Lingo-Perkins was when they brought her in). Some, like Prescott Sigmund, grow out a beard. But every once in awhile you get a guy like Canales who apparently does absolutely nothing to his appearance. Seriously, if I walked right past him, I would have known it was him immediately! He's even wearing the exact same pair of glasses!

Hahahaha I can't believe I forgot to mention this. I so wanted to say the same thing yesterday but for some reason forgot to post I had the same exact thought! It's obviously apparent that the only reason he wasn't caught sooner was he was hiding in a small town in Mexico. I had a severe AMW paranoia problem when the show was on the air, and even I would have known that this guy was Chuy if I saw him. I would have been calling that hotline saying I am 110% cross my heart I am no longer the boy who cried wolf sure! If this guy isn't Chuy Canales, then I'm not what my photo I.D. says!
He apparently was arrogant enough to think he wouldn't get noticed in a small town in Mexico. He thought wrong.

This was a good capture, I'm surprised he didn't change his appearance one bit like you guys said. Mexico is a big place and I guess he was able to blend in pretty well.

Agreed. I do want to say that this story is still a tragedy. Two children are without a mother for the rest of their lives, and witnessed her brutal murder which is something I can't imagine. At least now hopefully there will be justice.
Over a week later that we've had this photo of Chuy in his prison outfit on this site, and it still feels good to look at though.

As someone who follows court cases for a living, I can tell you that nobody ever pleads guilty, at least initially. There was one case I followed where a guy was charged with first-degree murder, pleaded not guilty and went to trial. That was the weirdest trial because his defense attorney wasn't denying his client committed the murder. They didn't call any witnesses and didn't offer any expert testimony. Instead, all the defense attorney did was argue that it wasn't first-degree murder since the evidence the crime was pre-meditated was circumstantial.
The jury convicted him of first-degree murder after just two hours of deliberating.

That is true, as in a lot of court cases it does seem pleading not guilty is just an initial formality, and they figure out where to go from there. (captued FBI top tenner Juan Elias Garica plead not guilty despite allegedly confessing from what I hear. But it was just the initial process). It just amuses me still to even hear the words "not guilty" and "Chuy Canales" in the same sentence.
