When it comes to fugitive cases, we must always remember in the long run the case is always about the victim. The fugitive is a bad guy/girl that needs to be caught of course. So usually I begin my case of the week postings with a brief description of what the fugitive was accused of and his crime in order to stress their danger and then summarize or post an article. Raymell Easter, this week's first exclusive-fugitive is wanted for shooting a 17-year old male to death during a home invasion robbery. But reading up on this case, rather than focus on our suspect, I wanted instead to focus on who this case is really about.
17-year old Johnteze Tunkara was a resident of Cleveland's East Side. Between 2011 and 2013, Tunkara was a care giver for Fatima Family Center; a groundskeeper for the city's water department; and a team leader with City Rising Farm, a non-profit urban agriculture program. He was also an active member of Neighbor Up, a community-improvement program of The Cleveland Foundation.
In a news article, Tunkara's mother, Latasha Washington, says she will miss arguing with her son, whose explosiveness would sometimes get him in trouble.
His mother explained that he had a run-in with police for a domestic issue, but she did not elaborate. As a result, he was sent in 2014 to an all-boys reform school in Pennsylvania. It was an alternative to a stint in a juvenile detention center.
Tunkara completed a GED while in Pennsylvania and returned to his mother's home early this year, motivated to find work and save enough money to buy a car and move into his own place.
Towards Employment, a local organization that helps ex-offenders and low-income and disadvantaged adults find full-time work, helped Tunkara inch toward that goal through a partnership with University Hospitals of Cleveland.
The program, Step Up to UH, trains residents of high-poverty neighborhoods near the hospital to become eligible candidates for full-time employment, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Tunkara's age would have kept him from the program, which until now had only been open to adults, but Towards Employment believed in Tunkara and pushed for his admittance.
The COO of University Hospitals called Tunkara a dynamic individual and he was set to begin work on March 23rd of this year.
However, tragically, that wouldn't happen.
According to Cleveland police, on March 11th of this year, Raymell Easter and another unidentified man went to Tunkara's home on Ashbury Avenue about 1:45 p.m. The men knew Tunkara, but were looking to rob him, according to court documents. A struggle between Easter and Tunkara ensued, and Easter was injured. Easter pulled out a gun, and fired five shots, killing Tunkara, according to an affidavit.
Witnesses saw men carrying a TV from the home after the shooting, police said.
Detectives interviewed several witnesses who were able to identify Easter, according to court records.
According to Tunkara's mother, it wasn't the first time the family was victimized. In 2012, three months after moving into the neighborhood, a trio of unknown men came in through the side door and robbed the family at gunpoint. Tunkara was robbed several times since, according to his mother. She believes her son was a target because people learned he made legitimate money through legitimate jobs.
Now the US Marshals are hoping to arrest Raymell Easter and bring justice to the family of a promising young man whose life was cut tragically short.
Thoughts? First, I hate commenting on the African-American community since I'm not black and not an expert, but what really frustrates me here is there a lot of young black men or men in general that get murdered after they fall in with the wrong crowd. There is still no excuse for their murder, and sometimes it is hard to overcome what is around in your environment. Here we have Johnteze- who didn't fall in with the wrong crowd and was doing everything right- a perfect role model- and sadly may have been targeted BECAUSE of that. I am not the most teary-eyed guy but this story got to me. The sky seemed the limit for Johnteze. But Raymell Easter and his buddy allegedly decided a frigging tv was worth his life. Hopefully after Easter is caught, it will lead to the arrest of his accomplice. There needs to be justice for Johnteze.
