Maximino Cortez was on AMW as a web-exclusive. Below is the archive description of his case:
Cops: Drunk Man Slams SUV Into Couple On Motorcycle
Robyn and Ronald Wright were coming home from a Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 29, 2008, when police say Maximino Gomez Cortez slammed into their motorcycle, killing them both.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Cortez was under the influence of alcohol when he weaved his two-door, blue Chevrolet Blazer into the couple's lane, coming at their Harley Davidson head-on. Police say Robert’s body landed more than 100 feet away in the grass, and Robyn was found 150 feet down the road.
When police arrived on the scene, blood was all along the road. Robyn and Robert were already dead, according to Cpl. Robert Brown.
First responders say when they were trying to get Cortez out of his vehicle, he cursed at them, believing he was still at home on his couch. Cortez allegedly told one EMT that he’d been drinking because he caught his girlfriend cheating on him.
According to police, despite his intoxication and the visible damage to his car and blood on the road, Cortez denied he was responsible for the deadly crash.
Angela Lou Esquivel, an EMT student who arrived at the scene, said responders could smell alcohol on Cortez as they questioned him. Still furious after the crash, Cortez even spit on an EMT who was helping him.
Cortez was taken to the hospital for tests and was released before manslaughter charges could be filed, and now cops need your help to bring him in.
Thoughts? I could swear I saw a civil suit was won against Cortez but now I can't find it so please don't quote me. He's still found in the FDLE search system so I am assuming he's still wanted. If anyone has proof otherwise, please e-mail us and let us know as sometimes the FDLE system as good as it is, doesn't remove captured fugitives and can be out of date.
And once again, Florida and drunk driving again. This case is beyond tragic. On Thanksgiving night of all nights, and as mentioned on AMW, Robyn and Robert's son will never spend another Thanksgiving with them again.
I know a lot of you who follow my postings know I get on my soapbox about drunk driving cases but it's because of the general attitude of these cases from some people. Most drunk drivers obviously didn't mean to kill their victims. If someone gets drunk one and night and accidentally kills someone on the road, and they have no prior record, do I think they deserve the same punishment as someone who deliberately shoots someone? Of course not. But they still were legally drunk, and driving, and need to be held accountable for their actions.
And just for the record, there's nothing wrong with going out and having fun and having drinks, if you're over 21. It's about being smart. I've been drunk before (I'm part Irish lol), but I've somehow managed to not cause destruction to anyone besides myself. So for the love of goodness sake, take a taxi or if it's in your city, use the Uber app.
Seriously, let's get the Wright family some justice and finally put Cortez behind bars.
