SAN MARCOS, Calif. - A man allegedly shot his brother-in-law during an argument in front of their North County home Wednesday before fleeing with his own preschool-age son, prompting a manhunt and a brief lockdown at a nearby primary school while authorities tried to find the father and child.
Zauren Hernandez Gonzalez, 30, is suspected of firing two rounds from a pistol at Navidad Santos in the 200 block of Avenida de Suerte in San Marcos shortly after 8 a.m. Hernandez then grabbed his 4-year-old son, Hugo, and ran off, according to sheriff's officials.
Deputies found Santos sitting on his driveway, suffering from bullet wounds to his abdomen. Medics took him to Palomar Medical Center. His condition and prognosis were not released.
Teachers at Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary School on Poinsettia Avenue kept students secured in their classrooms for a short time as authorities searched in vain for the assailant. The San Diego Fugitive Task Force then took over the effort to find Hernandez and his child.
The suspect was described as a 5-foot-9-inch, roughly 180-pound Latino with a shaved head. He was wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored T-shirt. His son, who has black hair and weighs about 75 pounds, was clad in green or black shorts, a gray T-shirt with stripes across the chest and thong sandals.
Anyone with information about their whereabouts was asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at (858) 565-5200.
