According to the FBI, Rivera Gracias actually turned himself in to US and El Salvadorian officials: www.fbi.gov/news/news_blog/newest-top-ten-fugitive-is-now-in-custodyI'm actually not surprised he capitulated. When you go from just being wanted to one of the 10 most wanted alleged criminals in the country, that's a lot of pressure on you.

It does seem that top tenners turn themselves in a lot less frequently when you compare them to those listed back in the 50s and 60s.

That does seem true. I think recently FBI top tenners are already pretty notorious wanted fugitives or on the run for a long time. Rivera Gracias was a recent case and the FBI made someone nobody had ever heard of, not even from AMW, an instant "celebrity" (in fugitive terms). That had to be a lot to handle since he probably thought he was flying under the radar.

I have to wonder if a higher-up in MS-13 didn't like the publicity on Gracias and forced him to surrender. At least he's off the streets.

It's a possibility but imo I think it was the pressure. He was probably hiding in relative plain sight in El Salvador and he knew too many people knew where he was. Perhaps he also thought about the reward money and how someone would rat him out if he didn't surrender. Who knows, but as you said, at least he's captured.

I was expecting him to be a longtime top tenner, I was surprised when I found out he was nabbed so quickly.

I admit my first reaction was "Hey FBI, stop adding fugitives who may be in random countries that aren't Mexico or Canada! Don't you want to catch people!" and then I realized he was a bad dude and his crime was a recent one as opposed to some cold cases they've added lately which gave me hope for his capture.

Lol I was thinking the same thing, I was wondering why they kept going for people out of the US that would likely not be found. Since his case was more recent that probably helped too, his looks etc. didn't change much so it was likely easier for him to be recognized.

It also helped that he surrendered. I wonder what would have happened in El Salvador if it was found out where he was but he refused extradition.
