GOSHEN – Michiana Crime Stoppers needs your help finding a suspected child molester from Goshen.
Court documents show Scott Culver, 49, had sex with an 11-year-old girl.
A probable cause affidavit says the girl told Elkhart County investigators she had sex with Culver at least twice. The documents indicate she met the suspect at an arcade his family owns. An old high school friend says she never would have suspected him of doing such a thing.
What was once a popular hangout on Jackson Street in Goshen is now a deserted business.
"It leaves a bitter taste in your mouth," said Sarah Roeder, who used to hang out at King Arthur's Arcade. Roeder says the business belonged to Culver's family. The two were high school friends.
"His personality, he was very fun loving, he was very artistic, had a very creative mind," Roeder said.
But Elkhart County court documents paint a different picture of Culver. They indicate on April 13, an 11-year-old girl told Elkhart County investigators that Culver had sex with her at least twice at the back of the arcade. The girl said she loved Culver and didn't want him to get in trouble.
"I was shocked, knowing a person for that long, you just don't expect this sort of thing," Roeder said.
The documents also show an investigator examined the girl's cellphone. On it, he found sexually explicit messages between the girl and suspect. He also found a message from Culver to the girl, stating "Hurry, or I'll drink all the wine."
"Upset, angry, confused, I don't understand how anybody could do something like that," said Raymond Watts, who also frequented the arcade when he was younger and lives nearby.
According to the court documents, an interview with Culver revealed he had been dating the girl for a month. He told investigators the girl told him she was 17. He also said he was in love with her.
"As an adult, you gotta know the difference between those kinds of things. I mean 17 and 11?" said Watts.
Investigators also interviewed the girl's 12-year-old best friend. The friend said she was the one who introduced the girl to Culver. The friend also said Culver had kissed her and touched her chest.
"For me, it's like something from my genre, my era and it's sad to see," said Watts.
Court documents state this all came to light after the girl's mother saw the girl leave a store with Culver. Culver quickly drove off after the woman yelled at her daughter. The documents indicate the woman thought her daughter was spending time with a girl named Sarah and that Culver was Sarah's father.
"[I'm] sickened to know that it was so close and also to know that he was a friend," said Roeder.
Neighbors say they haven't seen him for months, and the business has been closed for some time now. He faces four counts of child molestation, one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of child solicitation.
The Elkhart County prosecutor says they didn't find out about the incident immediately. The protocol is to file the case and request a warrant, which gives the prosecutor time to review the case and file formal charges.
Thoughts? I thought this would be a perfect case to add today since it's an Indiana case, , and the NCAA Men's Basketball championship is taking place there tonight. If only Indiana politicians were more worried about child molesters than whether two guys eat together in a pizza place, Scott might not still be on the loose. (Sorry as I usually don't get political or go off-topic, but I have both conservative and liberal friends that hated the original proposed religious freedom law).
As far as Scott Culver goes, he was a near 50-year old man whose alleged idea of fun was hanging out with an 11-year old girl, having sex with her, and drinking alcohol with her. It's disturbing to say the least. Oh, and I'm also not buying for a second he thought the girl was 17. One can mistake a 14 or 15 year old for that I guess. But 11? Come on. Even if she WAS 17, it's still creepy regardless of what consent laws are. (I swear officer, I thought she was only 32 years younger than me).
Also, note this line from another news article about the girl's best friend:
Police interviewed one of the girl's friends, a 12-year-old girl, who said Culver had also kissed her and touched her chest in a way that made her feel uncomfortable. She said Culver was aware of her age.
One more note- I don't know if the arcade still exists, it used to be owned by Culver's father, but new owners took it over who said they were trying to erase the stigma of what happened. So in fairness to the new owners, if they still own the place, they didn't do anything wrong and shouldn't have a bad reputation because of a previous ownership. At the same time, I can't blame anyone, especially parents, for not wanting to go back there.
