(Above photo credit: darkdowneast.com) From darkdowneast.com: On the night of April 20, 1999, 41-year old Bessie Selek was walking along Route 202 near the Waterboro-Lyman, Maine town line when she was hit and killed by a passing vehicle. The driver fled the scene, leaving Bessie there to die on the side of the road not far from her own home. Detectives zeroed in on her boyfriend, Raymond Wood. They’d had a tumultuous relationship. A long history of domestic violence and abuse. Maine State Police were certain that Raymond was their guy. During an intense interrogation by two State detectives, Raymond Wood even confessed to the crime. But as the investigation continued, it appeared the evidence wouldn’t so easily fit the foregone conclusion reached by police, and the confession by their primary suspect wasn’t exactly proof that he did it. I am placing Bessie’s case in the National Media section because it was the subject of an episode of a “Dark Down East” podcast. Additional online articles have Raymond Wood claiming he is innocent and that his confession was coerced. It could have been some random deranged maniac usually in cases like this they always center that n on the ex partner or abusive husband or male relative but something about this case stands out if Raymond did this it would obviously tie back to him I mean Bessie was terrified of her psychotic abusive ex but I think the police centered on him to quickly and let other suspects slip into obscurity I firmly believe that the killer regardless of who is still alive and maybe serving time in prison or living somewhere in new England or the mid Atlantic or the south

In my opinion there are only two scenarios:
-It was Raymond and there wasn’t enough evidence to prove it. (I fully acknowledge he is still technically innocent)
-While it still counts as a homicide, I think if it wasn’t Raymond, that it was simply just a coward not wanting to take responsibility and/or someone with warrants already that didn’t want their identity revealed if they stayed at the scene. Usually stranger hit and runs are not intentional (there are exceptions).
Maybe I’m too naive and optimistic a person but I can’t see a person with no known enemies or anyone with a motive besides Raymond (once again I acknowledge he is technically innocent atm) being struck down intentionally by a complete stranger. It was either someone she knew or a careless irresponsible driver (who would still be responsible for her death)
