Wei Tung Woo has been wanted for over 17 years. He was on AMW as a web-exclusive. Below is the archived description of his case:
Violent Calif. Murder Suspect Vanishes Into Thin Air
Shortly after 2 a.m. on May 10, 1997, Lisa Hu got home from a night out with her new boyfriend, Can Lau.
What Lisa didn't know was that, according to police, her estranged boyfriend, Wei Tung Woo, was lying in wait. Cops tell AMW he'd been sitting in his own car, waiting for the two of them to arrive before making his move.
Once Lisa and Can parked in front of her apartment complex, cops say Woo -- filled with a jealous rage -- ran over to Lisa and began shouting at her. The confrontation continued to escalate until Woo pulled a 9 mm semi-automatic from his waistband and pistol-whipped Lisa atop her head.
Before Can could even get out of the car to help her, cops say Woo pointed the gun at him through the car's sunroof and pumped two bullets into his head and torso.
Woo then ran back to his car and sped off under the cover of darkness.
Meanwhile, Lisa and Can were taken to a nearby hospital.
Though Lisa was released -- albeit, in a great deal of pain -- Can's injuries proved to be too severe and doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival.
New Detective Re-Opens Late-'90s Cold Case
Ever since the tragedy in Burlingame, Woo has managed to successfully avoid apprehension to this day. But much to Woo's dismay, detectives have not forgotten about him.
In September 2010, Detective Steve Vega of the Burlingame Police re-opened the investigation. He began looking through Woo's background, trying to identify places he might be hiding out and people he may be seeking refuge with.
Detective Vega believes that Woo still has ties to the Bay Area, primarily in San Francisco. Wherever he is, "Woo is known to have worked in the restaurant industry. It's all he knows," says Detective Vega. He may be working as a waiter, busboy cook or even a manager for restaurants or karaoke bars that pay their staff under the table.
Woo also has ties to Denver -- though there's a distinct possibility that he might be in Taiwan. Wherever he is, Detective Vega believes he's hiding out in areas with a large Asian population.
In addition, Woo also has a teenage son in the Bay Area, though Detective Vega says the two have not been in touch.
NorCal Cops Release New Suspect Sketch
In April 2012, nearly fifteen years after Wei Woo allegedly killed Can Lau, the Burlingame Police Department released a new sketch of Woo that they hope might lead to his apprehension.
They believe he might have gained a little weight and his face might have filled out a little bit over the years.
Thoughts? I checked San Mateo's case records and there has been no movement in Woo's case since 1997, once again enough common sense for me to say he's still at large.
Unfortunately there is no longer an age-enhanced sketch.
But I do have a message for Woo- if he's working in a Chinese restaurant- if he thinks he can do that and still hide- AMW capture #635 Raymond Pin was busted by a boy who if I recall was something like 11 years old. You've been warned.
