RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - U.S. Marshals announced Wednesday they are now searching for a suspected online predator, accused of targeting and raping women across the Richmond metropolitan area.
Investigators say the nature of attacks by fugitive Sterling Franklin is especially heinous. Franklin landed on the U.S. Marshals wanted list following an alleged rape in January. A woman told federal investigators that she met Franklin on an online dating website.
"He actually met one woman and forced himself on her and now is being charged with rape," said Brian Stalnaker of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. "He is known to use computers to contact women."
The victim also disclosed a chilling message sent to her after the attack.
"After the incident the woman received a text from [Franklin] stating that I gave you a 'gift,' which she presumed to be an STD," Stalnaker said.
Investigators are not sure what disease Franklin may be spreading, but for now they assume the worst. At least one of Sterling's online handles is "HandsomeBrooklyn718," and his Facebook page has not been updated since December. But authorities believe he is still active on dating sites.
"We still feel he is online and as far as we know he's still meeting women and infecting these women," Stalnaker said.
Franklin's last known addresses are both in Richmond's Gilpin Court public housing community. Records show Franklin resided on St. Paul Street and West Charity Street.
"Family members there were very evasive, they are protecting him," Stalnaker added. "They didn't give us any information but we do know that he was staying there."
In the past, Sterling has been convicted of assault, grand larceny, identity fraud, and trespassing. He skipped bail on charges in Henrico County last year. A local bail bondsman is even offering a reward for any information leading to Franklins arrest.
"He has numerous convictions and charges for assault so we just tell the public if you see him just call U.S. Marshals or Richmond city. Don't try to approach him yourself."
Franklin has a tattoo on his neck with the word "Solana" written in script. Investigators are asking for your help to get Sterling Franklin off the streets.
"The victims here are innocent people, they're being taken advantage of by him and someone like that needs to come to justice."
If you have any information that could lead to Franklin's arrest, all tips can be called in anonymously to the U.S. Marshals Office at 1-877-WANTED-2.
Thoughts? Right now we have a guy online trying to pick up women accused of one rape. Not only is he dangerous to women, but if he's not bluffing about having a STD- it's a public health risk as well. If anyone sees this guy on any dating site or elsewhere, be very careful, but do call the Marshals.
