From islandpacket.com (article is from 2020):
When a teenager goes missing in 2020, law enforcement officers usually don’t have to look further than the teen’s cellphone to find his location. But in the case of a 17 year old from Hampton County, who has been missing for more than a month, finding him has proven more difficult.
“It’s like he disappeared off the face of the earth,” said Hampton County Sheriff Thomas Smalls. DeShawn Tyrell Burns Jr., went missing Feb. 24 and was last seen at his home in Garnett in Hampton County, according to sheriff’s office Sgt. Marty Clapp, an investigator on the case. He said Burns “left with persons unknown and he hasn’t been found since.”
Clapp is one of four investigators on the case focusing search efforts on the nearby town of Estill, where many of Burns’ friends and former classmates live.
“THAT’S NOT TYPICAL” The sheriff’s office has worked with the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, going to locations where Burns may have been seen.
After obtaining a warrant, SLED officers are able to “ping” cellphone towers with the phone number of the person they are looking for to get an approximate location of the person’s phone. SLED pinged towers in Burns’ potential locations, but the searches came up empty, which indicates “that the phone is on longer in use,” Sheriff Smalls said. It is “hard to say” what that could mean in Burns’ case, according to Smalls.
But, “when you have a teen with a phone who is not using it, that’s not typical,” said Smalls. Smalls said leads from Burns’ Facebook page also proved fruitless. Deputies are waiting on some of the results from phone record subpoenas, according to Clapp. He said if the case hits a wall, investigators will re-trace their steps and interview family, friends and associates again.
Some 600,000 people go missing in the United States every year, and there are currently 216 open missing persons cases in South Carolina, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs).
