KING AND QUEEN COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A grieving King and Queen County family is hoping to generate leads in their loved one’s unsolved murder case.
James Edwards “Scooter” Byrd was shot and killed in his home in King and Queen County on August 16, 2016.
During a press conference on Wednesday, August 14, the FBI Richmond Field Office and the King and Queen County Sheriff’s office announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to his murder being solved.
“We’ve been going through this for eight years, and we just need some closure,” said James Young, Scooters father. “He was a good kid. He was full of laughter. He’d give you the shirt off his back.”
Young said that his son’s death has had a lasting impact on everyone in his family.
“We’ve been going through it. We got two kids, two little boys, that [are] his that we look at every day, and look just like him. So, you can never forget it,” Young said.
According to authorities, Scooter’s 13-year-old brother was asleep down the hall when he heard the shots. He ran to a nearby neighbor’s house to call 911.
“The investigation determined no forced entry was made into Scooter’s home. Investigators collected multiple items of evidentiary value, including cartridge casings [and] the shells from the bullets that were used to kill scooter,” said W.R. “Rob” Balderson, the King and Queen County Sheriff.
A few weeks after Scooter’s death, Sheriff Balderson said a handgun was recovered in Richmond that matched evidence collected at the crime scene. He said that, because of advancements in forensic technology, some progress has been made in re-testing it and gathering new evidence.
“We are able to download [data from] Scooter’s cell phone,” Balderson said. “Scientists at the FBI lab are doing comparative tests of DNA from the handgun to DNA were collected from several suspects at the beginning of this year. We’re anxiously awaiting those results.”
Balderson said he believes that whoever killed Scooter might still be in King and Queen County.
“There’s someone out there in our community that knows details the investigators don’t know,” Balderson said. “Help us, help the community on this eighth anniversary of Scooter’s life being taken from his family and friends, and let’s solve this investigation together.”
