ROXBORO, N.C. -
The State Highway Patrol and the Person County Sheriff's Office are taking a fresh look at an unsolved hit-and-run case where a young Roxboro man was killed in 2001.
A posting on a Facebook confession page has created renewed interest in the case of Nathan Poole, whose family has been hoping for justice for 14 years.
“I hope justice is served,” said the post on the Facebook page. “His family deserves answers and I'm praying the confession that was made will start the ball rolling getting them those answers.”
Nathan Poole's mother, father and aunt poured over the comments made to the Roxboro confessions page in response to an anonymous posting that claims to know who killed Nathan Poole, 22, in 2001.
That case remains unsolved.
“It went cold,” said Diane Cook, his aunt.
“It seemed like it just went downhill,” said Wanda Howerton, his mother.
On April 8, 2001, Poole was walking home along Roxboro's Mountain Road at about 2 a.m. He was on a stretch that runs between Halifax and Allensville roads.
“He was struck by a truck that hit him, dragged him and left him on the side of the road like an animal,” said Cook.
But on Wednesday, an anonymous post appeared on the confessions page saying some friends of the writer were too drunk to drive and hit a man with their Jeep on Mountain Road. The writer said they were more concerned about themselves than the victim. The post urged those involved to turn themselves in.
“I think it's a person that feels guilty and its eating him alive,” Cook said.
Poole's unsolved death is also eating his mother alive.
“A lot of nights I don't sleep,” Howerton said. “I'm up at 2 o'clock in the morning because of this. And I just wish that I could get closure for him.”
And she is pleading for anyone with information to come forward.
“If you thought anything of Nathan — tell what you know so we can get a closure,” she said, “And I thank you.”
The State Highway Patrol and the Person County Sheriff's Office have been inundated with tips and emails and are now investigating.
The Highway Patrol's lead investigator said he is trying to get additional resources to check out all the information they have been receiving.

Thoughts? At first I was suspicious the person who posted might have actually been the driver but then I read the confession after finding the Justice for Nathan Scott Poole Facebook page and to me it sounds like someone in the car but not the driver and/or just someone who knows who the men are. Whoever this guy is is still a coward for just posting this on a confession page instead of doing the right thing and telling the police. According to the poster, one of the men in the car used to work for the police department, ironically enough, so it might be a possible clue. But to the man who posted this, if you don't reveal yourself and who these men were, you are as just as guilty as them. What if Nathan was your friend or family member? Do the right thing. It will feel even better to "officially" get it off your chest, not just on Facebook.
