I am afraid to comment here- not because of any potential debate or anything like that- but because the reporting is currently a chaotic mess. It seems confirmed a shooter and attendee at former President Trump's rally in Pennsylvania were shot and killed. It is unclear if Trump was shot but he was taken to a hospital after being seen ducking and standing up with his fists raised and blood in his ear. It is also unclear whether or not this was an attempt on Trump's life.
What I will say is political violence is not the answer and I weep for how divided this country has become after 9/11- a moment that should have united us. I may have been young but I remember when one person could be a Democrat and another person could be a Republican and you can still respect another person's opinion. Heck, even in 2008 I remember it was such a great moment in history- we were either going to have our first black President on the Democratic side or a war hero and honorable man moving up from Vietnam POW to the highest office in the land in John McCain on the Republican side. I don't know what happened since then.
I am admittedly a Democrat but a centrist/moderate one that is concerned about both the extreme left and the extreme right in this country.
I fundamentally disagree with Donald Trump on just about everything- but I am glad to see he is expected to survive and who should lead our countries should be determined by votes not bullets. I also wish Trump as speedy a recovery as humanly possible.
And finally, my thoughts are with the currently unnamed victim at the rally.

Reuters said that trump is safe and the shooter is dead it actually hit him in the ear while I technically a Republican I consider myself more like a independent or a hybrid Republican I can see different issues but like scumhunter said this country should not take this path and the leadership is should not be done with murder or violence while I consider both Biden and trump both incompetent fool's I don't think anywhere in the constitution that says gee let's go murder the opposite party people in fact it's not legal it's called attempted presidential homicide and that's something everyone in the country should know before they leave the third grade I hate the unhinged left and right and even though scumhunter and I have different beliefs I still respect the fact that both of us agree that both hard Left and right are unhinged manoacs

I'd rather not delve into criticism or name calling at the moment and feel we need a pause from political discourse as one person lost their life and now apparently someone else besides the shooter may have been injured. Unfortunately if you look at social media not everyone feels the same way- but I hope this is the point where overall we all take a step back and self-reflect.

As unfortunate as that is I will say the secret service did a good job of neutralizing the shooter even though unfortunately 1 person lost their lives the death toll could have been a lot higher once again thank God for the secret service

As I said on the politics thread I do not condone today’s events, and I hope president trump a speedy recovery and my condolences to the person who was not the shooter who was killed. All this political polarization really makes politics less fun especially when there’s extremes on the political spectrum (I consider myself off the political spectrum now) that use violence to achieve their extremist aim.

The shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. Also this is why I was afraid to comment initially as facts need to come in but he was apparently a registered Republican (although he may have also donated to a liberal group in the past as well). This does put motive into question, along with the fact the shooter was so young. Regardless, political violence is still never the answer.

I'm not sure if politics are supposed to be fun but they are supposed to be a polite discourse about how to best improve your country. Unfortunately, it has become like sports and rooting for your team- if there's a D or R on your jersey- instead. |

Yeah at least back in the old days you were at risk of being harassed or hurt nowadays you have to keep opinions too yourself it is really sad like scumhunter said that we cannot have a polite discussion on anything like that without getting harassed or bullied

I mean were Americans we have to stand together and I know many of our political views are not the same but I can respect that at least you guys let me say my beliefs I respect both main factions like I respect Jon tester and Joe manchin and sinema even though I am a registered gop member I do respect people who can be bipartisan and I respect your guys opinions as well as you do mine

The victim has been identified as Corey Comperatore, a firefighter who tried to shield his family from the gun shots. Pretty awful and my thoughts go out to his family.
The motive is still unknown and Crooks being a registered republican doesn’t make the case any better or worse, but it makes why this happened a complete mystery at the moment as the perpatrator is no longer alive to explain why he did what he did.

The latest updates are that Crooks was kicked out of his high school gun club and looked up info on both Trump annd Biden and the DNC convention in Chicago. This is looking less and less politically motivated and more wanted to make a name for himself motivated- had it been Biden instead of Trump having a rally in Butler Crooks would have shot at him instead.
