Charlie Hill is wanted by the State of New Mexico for the murder of a police officer. He is one of several US fugitives being sought in Cuba.
Charlie Hill, a Vietnam war deserter in the late 1960s joined a black separatist group called The Republic of New Afrika upon his return to the United States. On Nov 8, 1971, Hill and two other New Afrika members were driving in a car full of rifles and bomb-making materials, when they were pulled over by officer Robert Rosenbloom. One of the men in the car shot and killed Rosenbloom and drove off. Three weeks later, they broke into the Albuquerque airport landing strip area and hijacked an airplane. Their preferred destination was Africa but they settled on Cuba when they were told that the plane didn't have enough fuel to get to Africa. Once there, the fugitives were granted political asylum, Hill's two accomplices having since died while in Cuba. Hill has since done interviews with journalists in Cuba and has admitted to killing officer Rosenbloom in some and denied killing him in others.
Recently, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez filed a letter ordering his extradition, calling Hill a cop-killer and a terrorist. In response, Hill's attorney, Jason Flores-Williams wants the charges against his client dropped because he said that the governor made those claims without any evidence and prejudiced any jury.

Thoughts? With the recent US-Cuba talks, these fugitive cases were the fugitive took off to Cuba are getting more attention. In the last day or so, the FBI even added wanted posters on their website of two fugitives that are believed to be in Cuba. About the statement from Jason Flores-Williams, perhaps he should tell his client not to admit to killing officer Robert Rosenbloom and saying he got what he deserved, since it could influence a jury.
