Kayla May Berg was 15-years old when she went missing from Antigo, Wisconsin in August of 2009. Her case was aired on the Februrary 20th, 2010 episode of AMW. Below is an archived description of the case:
Wisconsin Teen Vanishes Into The Night
On Aug. 11, 2009, 15-year-old Kayla Berg hung out with a friend who happened to be nine years older than her.
Kevin Kielcheski, 24, drove around town with Berg for awhile that evening until sometime between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Police told AMW that at some point in those hours, Kielcheski dropped Berg off at her ex-boyfriend's home in Wausau, Wis., some 40 minutes away from her Antigo home.
As the two had reportedly been smoking pot on their joyride around town, neither Berg nor Kielcheski were in an entirely lucid state of mind.
According to police, Kielcheski never watched Berg enter the home. However, he did remember it being dark inside, and he saw no one else around.
Nonetheless, Kielcheski told police he drove off, never seeing Berg again
Arrest Made; Police Hope To Unearth New Leads
Months later, after numerous leads dried up, police arrested Kielcheski on Oct. 26, 2009. They charged him with second degree reckless endangerment, basing the arrest on his involvement with Berg on that fateful midsummer night.
In addition to Kielcheski, who has cooperated with authorities, police have interviewed Berg's ex-boyfriend on a number of occasions. He has denied seeing her on that evening or any other since her disappearance.
Since Berg was allegedly with one or possibly both of them that night, police are truly stumped as to where she could be now or who else may have seen her.
With every passing day, police in Antigo fear the worst for Berg, yet they hold out hope that they can bring her back to her family for a jubilant reunion.
Police Hope National Publicity Brings Kayla Back Home
Berg was only 15 years old at the time of her disappearance. Less than three weeks later, she was to turn 16 -- a momentous occasion in any young girl's life.
There are some varying descriptions as to what Berg was wearing when she vanished, but police told AMW she may have been donning a long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and sandals.
Berg has laparoscopic scars on her abdomen from surgery she had in the year or two prior to her disappearance.
Additionally, she has small chicken pox scars on her right cheek/nose, and her ears and navel are pierced.
She had lived with her mother in Texas from June through the end of July 2009. Police said she didn't like it there for a number of reasons: Not only did Berg not make friends in the area, but there wasn't anywhere for her to practice gymnastics -- one of her great passions in life.
Berg does not have a cell phone of her own, but police believe despite this, she would definitely have found a way to check in with her friends or family in the time since she went missing.
Initially police thought Berg may have run away. But as days turned into weeks and then months, they are forced to consider the possibility that she might have met with foul play.
Since the onset of the investigation, numerous agencies have partnered up to find Berg, including the Antigo and Wausau police departments, the FBI and even the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
In addition to the large-scale ground search by authorities for Berg, her friends and family have also helped out on their own. Berg's loved ones have been canvassing the neighborhoods she was known to frequent, hoping to find the one lead that brings her home.
Unfortunately, no family, friends or the police tasked with finding her have been able to unearth the clue that pinpoints her exact whereabouts.
Thoughts? Even though there are some reasons to indicate a teen ran away in normal circumstances, Kayla's parents were separated, she was in a relationship with an older man her mother didn't approve of, her friends seemed evasive to police (according to the Charley Project), it can't be ignored that foul play is unfortunately a possibility based on the passage of time. In addition, according to the Charley Project, it is highly unusual for Kayla to not keep her parents informed of her whereabouts. What I do want to know is why Kevin Kielchieski is said to be no longer cooperating as of 2011. I always say this when someone doesn't cooperate with police. If you have nothing to hide, why wouldn't you be as helpful as possible?
