Martin Avelar is wanted in connection with the death of 14-month old Alexis Garcia. According to Newspapers.com archives, Alexis's mother was starting a new job and was leaving Alexis with her boyfriend Martin for the first time. When Alexis would not stop crying, authorities allege that Martin shook Alexis and threw him on an air mattress. Martin took Alexis to a hospital because Alexis was experiencing traumatic injuries. The decision was made to remove Alexis from life support after his mother and aunt had said goodbye to him.
Martin was charged with manslaughter and battery. Indiana's court records database shows that he failed to appear in court and a warrant was issued in February of 2003.

Thoughts? As of today, March 16, 2024, Martin is a new fugitive on the Michiana Crime Stoppers website. He appears to have been added last week. Indiana's court records database shows two "Clerk Administrative Events" in 2016 and 2022 for filing the 2003 warrant. I believe that St. Joseph County adopted Indiana's court records database after this crime occurred, which means the original court entries were done on paper. This would be why there is no warrant flag for this case (there would usually be a warrant flag for Indiana cases). I checked PACER and did not see a UFAP (Unlawful Flight To Avoid Prosecution) case for Martin.
I hope that there can finally be justice and accountability for Alexis's family. Martin clearly should not be around any small children and instead be in jail awaiting his trial.
