On November 10th, 2006, three men were found shot to death in the desert on the far Northwest side of Arizona.
The three victims, all Mexican Citizens, were Juan-Carlos Flores-Diaz, 42, Francisco Monreal-Maldonado, 27, and his brother, Rafael Monreal-Maldonado, 23. Their bodies were found by ATV riders about 17 miles west of Interstate 10 along West Avra Valley Road near North Pump Station Road. Each had been shot multiple times. It was believed all three victims were shot elsewhere and their bodies were dumped where they were found.
In 2006- Sheriff's Detectives named a suspect- then 52-year old Daniel George Gastelum (he is 60 years old today). Sheriff's detectives believe the killings were drug related.
According to reports, Gastleum lives in Mexico and has family in Hermosillo in the Mexican state of Sonora but also has family in Tucson.
Thoughts? I admit I learned/stole this case from HeadMarshal's case suggestions for The Hunt mentions in the general discussion board. However, I wanted to make sure the first posted weekly case for the second quarter of exclusive-fugitives was a particularly bad one.
If I'm being honest I feel this case would have a lot more publicity if the victims were not Mexican citizens and it's pretty infuriating to me that it hasn't received more. Drug-related or not, any guy capable of executing three people is dangerous.
I'll use the analogy of gang fugitives- where even if a fugitive's victim is another fellow gang member/killer he still needs to be caught because he's violent and his next victim could be an innocent bystander or even a child. We've obviously seen that way too often on AMW.
In this case, we don't even know what "drug-related" means in relation to these victims, they could be innocent and killed because they had knowledge of activity, but regardless, no human being has the right to take another's life if it's not self-defense.
The problem in locating Gastelum is him being a Mexican citizen. But the good news is he possibly visits family in Tucson. I could see him going down simply trying to cross a border. But so far that hasn't happened.
If you know where Gastelum is, do the right thing and call Pima County's crime line.
