Admin Note #1: Based on wanted location, our advice for anyone with information on Reyes and/or Velarde's whereabouts would be to call LAPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Ramon Reyes (pictured top left) and Luis Velarde (pictured top right) were aired on the January 19th, 1994 episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Reyes was also aired on AMW and became direct capture #355, but may in fact still be at large again. I will explain below:
"On October 19th, 1992, Reyes and Velarde robbed Ralph's supermarket in Van Nuys, California while their getaway driver waited outside.
Robert Ward, a Coca-Cola salesman from Palmdale was shot in the back of head and killed during the robbery.
Ward's death sparked a call for increased security at supermarkets around the state, including electronic security equipment such as silent alarms, video cameras and other countermeasures to increase employee safety.
While the getaway driver, Jose Santillan, would turn himself in, and get sentenced to 26 years-to-life, Reyes and Velarde would go on the run.
Now this is where the complicated part comes in for me, I usually don't post cases where I'm uncertain if they're still active, but I am posting this case today to get some answers as I am rather confused over some aspects.
Unsolved wiki says both men are still at large- but sometimes that site isn't always up to date.
An LA Times article from 1994 claims Reyes was captured in Mexico in 1994, although it doesn't mention as a result of AMW. Yet a woman claiming to be Ward's sister commented on the Unsolved wiki page that Reyes was still-at-large and "remains one of L.A.'s top 10 most wanted". She doesn't mention Velarde. And Reyes is still on LAPD's Most Wanted page, while Velarde isn't. However, LAPD's page isn't always up to date either.
So you can see why I'm still confused. Usually I post a case because I find out it's still active. As a matter of fact, it's sort of a new requirement of mine for this site. However, as an Unsolved Mysteries and AMW capture! case, this is a case I'm making a rare exception and posting about because I'd like to find out if it's still active or not.
My assumption is Reyes was captured in Mexico, but something went wrong as it often did in Mexico's in the 1990's (and often today as well although things are getting better), and he was released. I assume Velarde may have been captured since even the woman claiming to be Ward's sister didn't mention him but I have no proof of that.
Thoughts anyone? Or anyone not thoroughly confused.
