(Above photo credit: tn.gov) Reason for placement in National Media section: Urgent/national news network coverage for manhunt/breaking news case. From cnn.com: — A search is underway in east Tennessee for a man suspected of shooting and killing a sheriff’s deputy and injuring another during a traffic stop on Thursday, authorities said. The suspect, 42-year-old Kenneth Dehart, is wanted on warrants for first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office. The officer killed was Deputy Greg McCowan, according to Sheriff James Lee Berrong. A second officer, Deputy Shelby Eggers, was injured after returning fire. She was treated at a hospital and released, the sheriff’s office said Friday. Blount County, home to the city of Maryville, is about 30 miles west of Gatlinburg. The Blount County Mayor’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Dehart’s capture, Berrong said. Dehart is believed to be traveling on foot and should be considered “armed and dangerous,” the sheriff’s office said. People were advised to not approach the suspect and should instead contact law enforcement. His last known location was in the county’s Wildwood area, according to the sheriff’s office. The sheriff’s office has not provided details on what led to the initial encounter between the deputies and the suspect. The sheriff said the shooting happened after a traffic stop, and the deputy who was shot in the leg “returned fire.” It’s unclear if the suspect was also wounded. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the search and has issued a statewide blue alert for Dehart. amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/02/09/us/tennessee-deputy-shooting-manhunt-blount-county/index.htmlThoughts? As of today’s posting date (February 9th, 2024), DeHart is still listed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) website as one of their top ten most wanted fugitives. I literally just found out about this case so hopefully it is resolved quickly. www.tn.gov/tbi/tbis-top-10-most-wanted.htmlAdmin Note #1: The TBI website advises for anyone with information on DeHart’s whereabouts to Call 1 (800) TBI-FIND or write to TipsToTBI@tbi.tn.gov Admin Note #2: If you have any news-related updates on this case, please contact us here: amwfans.com/thread/1662/website-contact-form

This guy is giving me Steven Wiggins and Eric frein vibes due to the savagery and cowardice dehart has shown if he has an ounce of decency left in his hollow black heart he will turn himself in but I think he will not buy I can't stand attacks on law enforcement what kind of coward runs man and up and face the music dehart don't hurt anyone. Else 🥺 please

One thing I can assure you is DeHart is not having much fun at this moment- people who were fugitives that are later caught admit they had a rough time constantly looking over their shoulders. Imagine the usual paranoia in addition to the fact you’re accused of killing one of the brothers of the people looking for you. DeHart is advised to turn himself in because I don’t see this ending well for him otherwise.

Usually I try to be very professional I've had captures where I feel a lot of different emotions anger horror happiness and blind fury but as much as I have felt rarely this level of sadness this coward took a life of a brave sheriffs deputy I hold a soft spot for sheriffs deputies they saved my life from myself if he had done something else I probably would have been a much different person than who I am now he is my hero and I owe him a great deal of thanks for saving my life I agree with you scumhunter i hope dehart is having a horrible time on the run I hope hes just miserable constantly looking over his shoulder and let's hope he faces justice for his heinous deeds

The US Marshals are now involved but have some good news the female deputy was released from the hospital and is now recovering at home but what I find interesting is now the reward amount is 75,000 grand which given the horrific nature of the crime is apt but I also found a detail interesting that several private citizens are posting rewards as well hope dehart gets caught soon

It is important to note as I always stress in breaking news manhunts and I know I sound like a broken record but they are usually resolved quickly but people are now impatient because they are used to downloading songs in 5 seconds. The average time frame for a breaking news capture is usually 14 days max. Now there are some cases like Eric Frein where they last longer but in general it annoys me to no end when the general public asks “what’s taking so long?” after a fugitive has been on the run for only five hours. These people obviously don’t follow our forum and see all the fugitives no one has ever heard of on the run for decades.
This is an even more urgent manhunt than usual because DeHart showed he is willing to engage in a shootout with law enforcement- but he is still within the average time frame for a capture.

I actually live in the Appalachian mountains but in North Carolina so I live in Murphy if that sounds familiar it was where Eric Rudolph was caught but this is a similar manhunt because I have been to Maryville and Gatlinburg pigeon forge area and let me tell you that area is densely forested and sparsely populated but there are towns in several areas Maryville is a very large town but I believe he maybe heading to Nashville or trying to head to Florida

I found an article from wate.com dehart apparently has a criminal record the distance from new York to los Angeles including 13 counts of violating a protective order 3 counts aggravated assault charges and three counts of domestic violence among others the shocking parts of this of all the criminal charges he faced it only has one conviction was for aggravated assault which he served two years in bass correctional complex and his a record going back all the way to when I was one year old in 2002 which makes me feel old and shows that he is a recidivist and what really surprises me is he only has one conviction that's what really bothers me and the fact that Tennessee usually does pretty well in keeping guns out of dangerous peoples hands but I hope dehart is like Steven Wiggins who did an awful crime but he at least surrendered to police which he's still.a horrific piece of crap who is current on Tennessee death row lets hope dehart gets there as well if proven guilty because he is innocent until proven guilty and we all don't want him to be able to hurr anyone else

Glad he's in custody and let's hope Mr Mccowan and deputy eggers doesn't have to worry about him doing anything else to anymore I hope deputy eggers makes a full recovery and she can rejoin the force she deserves any award she showed extreme bravery and I also hope deputy Mccowan can rest in peace and I wish his family can at least have some peace of mind knowing he is in custody
