Fugitive On The Run Since 1986
Georgia investigators are searching for a man who has evaded capture for more than 20 years.
On March 28, 1986, Donald Wade Smith was found face down in Fauscett Creek in Dawsonville, Ga. Cops say he'd been shot once in the head.
A narcotics unit investigation revealed that two days before, in Cobb County, Ga., Donald purchased a gram of cocaine for $100 from a woman named Mary Alice Cross.
Cops say he used the drugs, but then couldn't pay.
Cross and her associate Donny Woods tried to make Donald pay, with no luck.
"He couldn't give them something he didn't have," said Mitchell Posey, Assistant Special Agent In Charge at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Posey said Woods and Cross then kidnapped Donald at gunpoint and took him to see another man named Mike Bryant.
Cross sold the drugs for Bryant, who was also her boyfriend.
To deal with the situation, Bryant called on his "enforcer," Manford Bruenn.
Cops: Man Left In The Woods To Die
When Bruenn's assault didn't make him produce the cash, cops say Bruenn handcuffed Donald and forced him into Cross's car.
Police say Bruenn took Donald from Cobb County, Ga. to Dawson County, a few counties north.
According to Posey, Bruenn knew the area and had been there before.
Cops say he took Donald into the Woods, shot him and removed the cuffs.
Bryant, Cross and Woods were all prosecuted for their roles in the kidnapping, but Bruenn has never been brought to justice.
Cops Bruenn just disappeared and no one has seen him since the early 1990s.
National Search Yields Few Recent Clues
During the investigation police knew Bruenn hid in Georgia, New York and Washington D.C. He's originally from Milwaukee, Wis. and has family there.
Now, cops say they're not sure where he could be hiding. But, if he is still alive, it's likely that he has changed his identity.
Police have created an age-enhanced composite sketch to show what Bruenn might look like today.
Thoughts? There are plenty of places Bruenn can be and we just have to hope the age-enhanced sketch is fairly accurate. It should be noted a lot of these guys on the run for 20-plus years eventually get caught for innocuous reasons like applying for social security. So we can also hope he slips up one day as well.
