FREDERICK, Md. (WBFF) —
An argument inside a neighborhood lounge ends in a violent murder.
James Brown, 33, is wanted in the stabbing death of a man in Frederick County.
March 18, 2023.
Investigators say Frederick Police were called to the Exhale Lounge in downtown Frederick around 1:16 am.
Inside, officers find a man lying in a pool of his own blood and with multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical professionals.
The owner of the lounge was interviewed by police, and officers viewed surveillance footage from inside the lounge.
According to court documents, the footage shows two men exchanging words in the kitchen area of the lounge.
Investigators say during the argument one of the men pulled out a gun and placed it to the other man’s head.
Investigators detail the two men began fighting over the gun when suddenly another man appeared and began stabbing the victim who had the gun placed to his head.
“This was an extremely violent stabbing,” said Mat Silverman, a District Chief with the US Marshals Service. “The stab wounds go through and through on our victim. Some of the stab wounds to the face. Some were to the upper body and chest area. He was trying to defend himself. He had major wounds to his hands and broken nails.”
Investigators say the owner of the lounge interrupted the attack, causing the two suspects to flee the scene.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transported to an area hospital.
Surveillance video also helped investigators identify who was involved, officials say.
Police identified the man armed with the gun as Derrell Prune and the man who fatally stabbed the victim as 33-year-old James Brown.
Prune has since been arrested, but Brown remains on the run.
“Prue actually turned himself in to police,” said Silverman. “Brown is still thought to be somewhere in the area. We don’t believe he has the means to flee the area.”
Brown has a criminal history that spans more than a decade and centers on drugs.
According to court documents, Brown has been arrested on felony drug distribution charges four times.
Records show arrests in 2017, 2013 and 2012 all ended in convictions and time served in prison.
But not in 2022. Court records list charges as STET.
Brown is now charged with murder and on the run.
“We're putting out right now he’s believed to be armed and dangerous,” said Silverman. “We don’t know if this is the first time or the last time this will happen.”
