A 17-year-old Lac La Ronge boy killed moments before his teenage girlfriend was abducted is being remembered by family as a "very honest, hard-working young man."
Dustin Bird, a Grade 10 student at Senator Myles Venne School in Lac La Ronge, was shot and killed early Wednesday morning while at the home of his girlfriend, 17-year-old Kayla Natomagan. In the moments after Bird was shot, Natomagan was abducted, leading to an Amber Alert and multi-province manhunt for the ex-common law spouse of Natomagan’s mother.
“They were so much in love,” Bird’s grandmother Janet Venne said of Bird and Natomagan.
Police arrived at Natomagan’s home shortly after 3 a.m. following reports of a firearm being discharged. They found Bird with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the shooting suspect had fled with Natomagan.
RCMP promptly issued the Amber Alert, saying the 17-year-old girl had been abducted by, 43-year-old Jonas Budd, who RCMP said was the “estranged common law spouse” of Natomagan’s mother and was known to police.
The Amber Alert ended shortly after 11 a.m. when she was found safe by RCMP members from Manitoba’s Cranberry Portage detachment. Budd, who as of Wednesday mid-afternoon was still at large, likely fled on foot into the bush, RCMP said in an updated statement.
He is believed to have a rifle and is considered armed and dangerous.
Venne said Bird, an honour-role student and football player, had been living with her this school year. He was a talented artist and would draw anything that struck his fancy, Venne said.
Bird had hoped to work in the trades, and pursue training as an electrician or operating heavy machinery, he told his grandma.
Tammy Cook-Searson, chief of Lac La Ronge First Nation, described the events as “horrific” and said both Bird’s and Natomagan’s families are in shock.
“This is something we never thought would happen in our community,” she said.
Budd was believed to be driving a 2001 GMC Sierra 1500 extended cab truck with Saskatchewan license plate 043 JEZ.
He is described as an aboriginal man, 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has several tattoos, including a bear paw on his left forearm, an eagle head on his left calf, a ribbon with the name Nicole on his left shin, and feathers on his upper torso and back.
Natomagan's mother - the estranged common-law spouse of Budd - has "been accounted for," said RCMP Sgt. Craig Cleary.
Police ask anyone who sees Budd to call 911 and not approach him. Anyone with information should call 1-877-SOAMBER.
