I sometimes like to "surprise" forum members with my weekly exclusive fugitive with an obscure but underrated case I found while researching potential candidates. :)However, since every member also are scholars of the FBI's wanted fugitives website- the only thing surprising about this week's fugitive is the fact that it took so long for him to be added to the forum. For that, I apologize. In any case, here is the FBI's description of a dangerous fugitive.
"On March 15, 2006, arrest warrants were issued by the judicial authorities in Albania for several members of a specific Albanian Organized Crime group based in Durres, Albania. Plaurent Dervishaj has allegedly been a leading member of this particular group since 1997, and has been charged by Albanian authorities with foundation of a criminal organization, premeditated murder in complicity, and illegally keeping weapons and munitions. Specifically, Dervishaj is wanted for allegedly murdering a rival gang member and wounding two other members on October 17, 1998, in Albania. He is also wanted for allegedly murdering two other rival gang members and wounding a third on October 29, 1998, in Albania. Dervishaj is also wanted for allegedly murdering the leader of a rival gang with an anti-tank weapon on August 22, 1999, in Albania. He is also believed to have been involved in several other murders carried out in Albania as recently as February of 2005.
Dervishaj avoided arrest in Albania by flying from Vienna, Austria, to New York on March 15, 2006. Arrest warrants were not executed in Albania until March 17, 2006. Albanian law enforcement officials have declared that Dervishaj is currently their most wanted fugitive.
A provisional arrest warrant was issued for Plaurent Dervishaj in the District of New Jersey on April 17, 2006, on the charge of being a fugitive from a foreign country."
Before I get to thoughts I also should add since I think it's interesting that Plaurent is not the only member of the Dervishaj family to get himself in trouble with the law- and is also not the only member to go on the run.
In March of 2012, an international manhunt was launched when Plaurent's brother Redinel "Redi" Dervishaj fatally stabbed a groom-to-be outside a restaurant in Staten Island. He was eventually arrested at his Aunt's house in Palos Hills, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Redinel Dervishaj claimed self-defense and a Grand Jury declined to indict Redinel on manslaughter charges.
However, Redinel's luck would be short lived when he, along with a friend, and a Staten Island cop, were federally charged in December of 2013 with attempting to extort a Queens businessman. They claimed to offer "protection" but really they were threatening him with violence and a gun.
Also- it should be self-explanatory, but as far the title wanted year and state- even though Plaurent Dervishaj is Albania's Most Wanted fugitive with crimes since 1999, in America technically he is only wanted for being a fugitive from a foreign country. The wanted year was easy since he was charged in 2006. Putting the wanted state with confusing but I decided that despite the warrant being issued in New Jersey, the Wanted Poster was from the FBI's New York Field Office, and it is the state he fled to so that's what I went with. Sorry if I confused everyone even more.
Thoughts? A lot of us have said in the past Dervishaj would make a great addition the FBI's top 10 list. While currently that's not possible, if anyone gets captured off that list I'd say he would be a great addition despite technically being wanted in Albania. He's wanted for multiple murders, one involving a frigging anti-tank weapon, so I'd say that makes him dangerous here as well.
Obviously, New York neighborhoods with Albanian populations are where Dervishaj may be, Queens, Staten Island, and Yonkers comes to my mind, but I do find it interesting his brother was captured in Chicago, and this is nothing but my own speculation, but in my opinion based on that I think it should be a possibility. He's wanted for some serious crimes in Albania, so I doubt he fled back there. He's in the states somewhere. Hopefully someone comes forward- they'll probably do it anonymously because of how dangerous Plaurent is- but hopefully someone does.
