A 5-year-old boy shot in the face when a bullet went through the window of his east side home underwent surgery Wednesday, family said.
Meanwhile, police said they continue to investigate the Tuesday shooting.
It is unknown if the boy, Donovan Lyles Jr., will lose vision in his right eye as a result of the shooting, said his great aunt, Karla Brazelton. He was undergoing surgery Wednesday afternoon at Children’s Hospital in Detroit.
“Last night we weren’t sure he was going to make it or not, but he’s fine,” Brazelton said.
“He’s in good spirits,” she added. “He’s taking it better than everyone.”
Around 5 p.m. Tuesday in the 20200 block of Irvington, Donovan was home with his mother and grandfather when shots rang out from the street, police said. Donovan was playing video games at the time, one of his favorite pastimes, Brazelton said.
A bullet pierced the window, Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said, but “we don’t know at this time if it was a drive-by, if it was a random bullet, if the house was targeted.”
Brazelton said the family moved into the home on Irvington during the summer and doesn’t really know anyone in the area.
“We have no idea why anyone would do that,” she said.
Donovan is listed in critical condition. No one else was reported injured in the incident, police said.
“(Donovan) is a smart little fellow,” Brazelton said. “He’s such a sweetie pie. He tells you he loves you over and over. When the nurses discussed the situation with him he said ‘Well, if I can’t see in one eye, I’ll be just like a pirate.’ He’s got a real good attitude.”
----
Thoughts? According to different articles, Donovan was simply watching cartoons when someone shot up his home, striking him in the eye. Also, the shooter may have been targeting a different home. Sadly this sounds like more senseless gang violence that ends up victimizing innocent children. If the shooter isn't caught, then he/she could victimize more innocent people. The streets of Detroit are extremely violent but plenty of good people live there, and they need to be safer by arresting this shooter and any accomplices.
