On a Friday night earlier this month the normally quiet Hayes Valley neighborhood in San Francisco was struck by a violent tragedy.
At about 10 PM on the evening of January 9th of this year, police discovered four victims inside a bullet-riddled car after neighbors reported heavy gunfire.
The victims were later identified Yalani Chinyamurindi, 19, of San Francisco; Harith Atchan, 21, of San Francisco; David Saucier, 20, of Antioch, California; and Manuel O’Neal, 22, who investigators said did not have a known permanent city of residence.
Neighbors in the 200 block of Page Street heard as many as 15 shots during the lethal barrage. The gunfire sprayed dangerously across the neighborhood, blasting into at least one house where a bullet slammed into a refrigerator.
Officers at the time were looking for a late-model silver Scion that may have been involved.
Investigators believe the murders were gang-related and the murder is still unsolved.
Meanwhile the community is reeling. A prayer vigil was held shortly after the murders and answers are still being sought.
Admin Note #1: According to online articles, anyone with information on the homicide is asked to call San Francisco police at (415) 575-4444 or send a tip by text message to TIP411 with "SFPD" at the start of the message.
Thoughts? I want to stress that "gang-related" doesn't mean all four young adults were involved in criminal activity. Although it is the case for some of the men, Yalani Chinyamuindi had no criminal record and was described as just being in the "wrong place at the wrong time" by his mother.
O'Neal was being prosecuted for weapons possession and Atchan was on parole over a robbery.
Perhaps Yalani was in a car with young men he shouldn't have been hanging out with, but he also didn't deserve to be murdered.
And all the young men, criminal activity or not, still have family, still have friends, that have lost a loved one. One thing I've learned from watching shows like The First 48 is that most Detectives only care about one thing: someone was murdered. While drugs or criminal activity may help with leads, they work the case like any other because it's their job to solve it. And I'm sure investigators are doing their best in this case. But of course, broken record again, people need to talk.
It's important to solve the case and help put this community at peace.
