ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI - Roxanne Harris is struggling to make sense of her mother’s death, days after her lifeless body was found in an Allegan County home and a murder warrant was issued for her mother’s husband.
Harris, 28, says financial troubles may have strained her mother’s marriage with 66-year-old Harold “Butch” Knight, but she’s having difficulty processing allegations that Knight may be responsible for her mother’s death, as police suspect.
“I hope he turns himself in, and we can get answers and we can get closure,” said Harris, who lives in the Lapeer, east of Flint.
Harold Knight has been missing since Jan. 13 when authorities discovered the body of Sara Lee Knight, 48, in her Ganges Township home.
Police say Sara Knight’s body showed signs of strangulation, and a murder warrant has been issued for Harold Knight. He is missing and believed to be driving the victim’s Subaru Forester.
Harris said her mother was a smart, energetic and loving woman, who cared deeply about her job.
She worked as a respiratory therapist for Maxim Healthcare, helping patients throughout West Michigan, including Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Holland, Harris said.
“She was like the first person to be there for anyone,” she said. “She was so compassionate.”
She said her mother loved the outdoors, recalling how the two often took camping trips during the summer, visiting spots throughout Michigan, such as the Keweenaw Peninsula, as well as other parts of the country.
Harris also said her mother was a consultant for Mary Kay, a beauty products supplier, and that she loved the color pink. More often than not, all her things, from her pens and handbags to her shoes, were always her favorite color, Harris recalled.
Police learned of Sara Knight’s death after receiving a 911 call. They believe the call was made by Harold Knight, and that he was in Southeast Michigan at the time.
Harris, a mother of three, said she’s heard reports that Harold Knight purchased a gun and ammunition the day before her mother was found dead. She said she hopes that Harold Knight is brought in safely and unharmed.
“I just hope he’s going to be found, and found alive so we can get our answers,” she said. “I would like to see him go to court. I would like to see justice served.”
Harris said her mother and Harold Knight had lived in Maine for a period of time until May, when they moved back to Michigan. Sara Knight’s LinkedIn page shows she was a student at the University of Southern Maine and that she worked as a respiratory therapist at the Central Maine Medical Center.
Harris said Harold Knight and her mother had been married for 15 years.
She described him as “quiet” and “distant,” and that she didn’t feel that she knew him well. Still, it’s been shocking to hear that police have issued a warrant for his arrest, Harris said.
She knew the two had “financial problems,” and that they “had just made a huge move” and “were trying to bounce back.” But beyond that, she doesn’t know what might have caused friction between the couple.
“Nothing makes sense,” she said.
Thoughts? I was originally going to go with a different case this week for my weekly-exclusive case, and normally wouldn't post a non-breaking news case this early on in a fugitive search (Sara Knight's murder happened only two weeks ago), but the reason I am is because Knight has reportedly been spotted in the state of Maine where he has previously spent time. I believe by this site adding even more publicity to this case more quickly, we can flush Knight out of hiding faster as well.
