When AMW announced as returning to Fox in 2021, us forum members were excited but also apprehensive about what we saw were some warning signs for the show. Unfortunately we were proven right and the show was canceled.
Nearly 12 years after the 2011 AMW Fox cancelation and we've yet to see a TV show in similar vain that will last. In Pursuit is a great show but only 12 episodes a year.
So let's just say somehow AMW is attempted again- and you are put in charge. What would you do to make it last this time?
Here are mine:
1. The host must be connected to John Walsh in some way. Whether that be Callahan, Elizabeth Smart, or a former AMW correspondent, the host and preferably some producers must be related to the original show. I feel the main reason the reboot of AMW failed, more than anything else, was that viewers wanted to see John Walsh and no one else. This was not Elizabeth Vargas's fault. All of us on the forum agreed- in a reboot plagued with problems- Vargas actually did a good job and was the least of what was wrong with the show. However, as forum member pakman pointed out- it would have went a long way if John Walsh has endorsed her publicly to intro the reboot and not just in news article. The original AMW worked because viewers trusted John Walsh. Fair or not, anyone not connected to Walsh or at least victim's advocacy will have a rough time.
2. Make it a weekend show again. I realize this means having to compete with On Patrol Live, a more successful reboot of a crime show, but there is enough room for two shows. AMW was like a weekend tradition for us growing up.
3. Worry about telling a story. Do not give in to cool graphics or anything else. Just tell the story as well as you factually can.
4. Make the profiles as long as they need to be- but not too long or too short. We do not need a three parter on a fugitive case that could be done in one segment.
5. Bring the show back to D.C. Area. It will feel more official that way. Or at least a middle America happy medium city likw Atlanta. NY and LA are too glitz and glamor imo.
So anyway, those are mine, what would be yours? I realize this may be seem like a moot point for the time being but just for general discussion purposes lol.
