Despite recent controversies regarding misconduct between officers and the public in the media, it should be noted that numerous officers die each year while serving the public in the right way. AMW from 2004-2011 did a Line Of Duty feature at the end of each episode. Each Sunday, I'm going to take an entry from the Officer Down Memorial Page and mention their story. Some of these stories will be mentioned in the national media, others will not. --- Flagstaff Police Officer Tyler Stewart was shot and killed while investigating a domestic violence incident at a home in the 800 block of West Clay Avenue at approximately 1:30 pm, December 27, 2014. When Officer Stewart arrived at the scene a male subject exited the home and opened fire on him, striking him in the face. Despite being wounded, Officer Stewart was able to activate an emergency alert button. Responding officers discovered him suffering from the gunshot wound and he was transported to a local hospital where he later died. The subject who shot Officer Stewart committed suicide at the scene. Officer Stewart had served with the Flagstaff Police Department for less than one year. www.odmp.org/officer/22313-police-officer-tyler-jacob-stewart

San Juan, Puerto Rico Police Agent Edwin Roman-Acevedo was shot and killed while off duty when he intervened in a robbery at a pharmacy on at the intersection of PR-850 and PR-846, in Trujillo Alto. On November 26, 2014, he was in the pharmacy's parking lot when he observed two armed subjects approaching the entrance. A struggle ensued for his service weapon when he identified himself as an officer. The second subject shot Officer Roman-Acevedo during the struggle. Despite the wound, Agent Roman-Acevedo was able to maintain control of his weapon and returned fire, wounding one of the men. Agent Roman-Acevedo was transported to Rio Piedras Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Both subjects fled but one was taken into custody at a nearby hospital after seeking treatment for the gunshot wound. The second subject was arrested by the FBI as a result of the ensuing investigation. Agent had served in law enforcement for 10 years. He is survived by his wife and one child. www.odmp.org/officer/22283-agent-edwin-o-roman-acevedo

Police Officer Justin Winebrenner was shot and killed while confronting an armed subject while off duty at approximately 2:00 am. He and several friends were at a pub in the 1800 block of East Market Street when another patron became disorderly and was ejected from the business. The man returned a short time later and brandished a handgun at the staff and other customers. Staff member, who knew Officer Winebrenner was a police officer, alerted him to the situation. He and another off duty officer confronted the man, who then opened fire. Officer Winebrenner was struck once in the chest and suffered a fatal wound while the other officer suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound. Three citizens were also shot and wounded. The subject, a convicted felon, fled the scene on foot. He was located and taken into custody by a canine unit approximately one mile away. Officer Winebrenner had served with the Akron Police Department for seven years and had previously served with the Medina County Juvenile Detention Center for two years. He is survived by his 4-year-old daughter and fiancee. www.odmp.org/officer/22273-police-officer-justin-winebrennerUpdate: Kenan Ivery has since pled not guilty for the charge of aggravated murder in Officer Winebrenner's death. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty if Ivery is convicted.
