From the Las Vegas Police department The Murder of Duane Ewers Victim: Duane Ewers, 69 YOA Suspect: White male, 27 to 30 years old, well built, 6' 1", 180 pounds Location: North Loop Trail, Mount Charleston (10,000 ft level) Date: 7/21/1996 Synopsis: Duane Ewers, a retired anesthesiologist from Southern California and avid hiker, traveled to Mount Charleston to hike to the summit with the suspect. Ewers and the suspect were seen hiking the trail after dark. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots at approximately 1:00 a.m. Several people saw the suspect before and after the murder. The suspect tried to drag Ewers into the wooded area near the trail, because of the loose footing the suspect abandoned his efforts and fled. Ewers vehicle was reported missing from the parking area at the trail head. The vehicle was recovered several months later in the parking garage at the Treasure Island Hotel. None of Ewers' family or friends knew who he was with during this outing. The attached drawing is a composite made from witness descriptions. Strange case. Perhaps Ewers made friends with the man at the hotel but unfortunately he was obviously a person not to be trusted.
