DANBURY -- An arrest warrant has been issued in state Superior Court in Danbury for 40-year-old Daniel Costa, charging him in the May stabbing death of his aunt, Ana Barros.
Authorities believe that Costa is in Portugal, where he went in May, three days before another relative reported Barros missing and two weeks before her body was found buried beneath a newly poured concrete floor in the basement of the Housman Street apartment house where they both lived.
Danbury State's Attorney Stephen Sedensky confirmed this week that a warrant had been issued for Costa, but declined to detail the crimes he is charged with committing.
According to Interpol, the world's largest international police organization, Costa is accused of "crimes against life and health" and "thefts."
If Costas is found, he would have to be extradited to the United States to face prosecution.
The 55-year-old Barros, who lived in the house since coming to Danbury from Portugal more than 30 years ago, was last seen by co-workers at Fairfield Processing on May 11. She was reported missing by her niece, Annabelle Almeida, on May 28. Costa reportedly left for Portugal on May 25.
Police sources said the Barros' body was covered with lime and wrapped in plastic before being placed in the makeshift grave, where Danbury police found it on June 6.
Costa has been a suspect almost from the start of the investigation, police said. Besides Barros, he was the only other occupant of the house, which he co-owned with his parents, who returned to Portugal years ago.
Another source familiar with the case said Costa tried unsuccessfully to withdraw money from his aunt's bank account before leaving the country.
He also allegedly lied to Almeida about Barros' whereabouts when, concerned by reports that her aunt hadn't been at work for three days, Almeida went to the house on May 15 to check on Barros.
"He said he's seen her. He said, `Don't worry. If there's any problem, I'll call you,'" Almeida told The News-Times in June.
The three-story house, which contains three apartments, is in foreclosure by BAC Home Loans Servicing.
Court and city records indicate that Costa obtained a $100,000 mortgage on the property in September 2007, and another $345,000 loan on it two months later. The house is valued at $435,000, according to the city assessor.
Before leaving the country, Costa applied for a state program designed to avoid foreclosure, but failed to show up for the mediation session at state Superior Court in Danbury.
"I attended the mediation session, but I was unable to do anything constructive," said Danbury attorney Tamera Fisher Byun, Costa's lawyer in the foreclosure case.
Byun said she's had no contact with Costa and has no information regarding his whereabouts.

Thoughts? As of this posting date (4/16/2022), there is still a Red Notice poster for Costa's arrest on Interpol's website. I am placing Costa in the Fugitives on TV section because he was mentioned in a CBS News article about Interpol's Most Wanted fugitives. I assume this case may be a matter of how easy it will be to get Portugal to extradite regardless of how much in hiding Costa is in:

The following is the form Interpol provides for anyone who wants to submit information on Costa's whereabouts:
