Serial Robber On The Run
The beauty industry can be an ugly place, and as Portland police told AMW, it can be a dangerous one. Heidi Moe was working the front counter at the trendy Kalista Hair Salon in June of 2005 on a particularly slow day. Other than a few stylists and clients, the salon was empty and the morning was uneventful. Until Shane Lennon walked in, that is.
Employees say a man in his twenties unleashed a hunting knife and demanded all the money in the register. Heidi turned over the cash and the suspect fled on foot. When the salon owner, Kim Schone, found out what had just happened, she took off after him in her high heels with a client following right behind her. They almost caught up to the thief when he got in his faded blue Chevrolet sedan and sped off.
When Portland detectives heard about the case, they thought the M.O. sounded awfully familiar. They knew that three similar robberies had taken place in the previous month. On May 11, 2005, a coffee shop, Mocha Express, was hit. On June 3, the Heart-To-Hand Quilt Shop was robbed and -- only four days later -- Pacific Beach Tanning Salon was as well. Authorities believed that they had a serial robber on their hands and hoped that these robberies wouldn't soon turn violent. The problem is, they still had no idea who the suspect was.
Cops say the robber laid low for two months before showing his face again. On August 1, he went back to Pacific Beach Tanning Salon and held the shop up for a second time. Police tell AMW that the robber got away with every last penny in the till, a total of $100. Cops wouldn't see any sign of their knife-wielding bandit for weeks. On September 30, 2005, he robbed a Subway Deli and in November, he headed back to Pacific Beach for a third and final robbery.
A Flight From Justice
Authorities got a huge break in the case when the assailant was caught on surveillance cameras robbing the Subway restaurant. A black sweatshirt he wore during the robbery had on it the logo of a popular area strip joint, Union Jack's. When cops went there to question some of the employees, one of the exotic dancers said she used to date the guy police were looking for: Shane Matthew Lennon.
Once police identified their serial robber, they tracked him down and arrested him. Authorities tell AMW that Lennon confessed to his crime spree and it seemed as though the case was closed. But police say Lennon didn't bother showing up for his pre-sentencing hearing and now cops need help to track him down again.
Thoughts? Other AMW archive pages which I currently can't find said Lennon is of Irish descent and may have fled to Ireland.
