Earlier this year, the search for Gabby Petito and eventual search for her suspected killer Brian Laundrie became one of the most high-profile true crime cases in recent memory in this country. With it though, came a criticism for many of the way the media handles cases like hers while missing and unsolved minority cases receive nowhere as much publicity. Even Gabby's own father, Joseph Petito, acknowledge the discrepancy and implore the public to help find all missing people and not just his daughter.
With me seeing this becoming an ongoing issue, I figured we should probably make a thread where we could talk about the issue. Share your thoughts etc.. Although I prefer cases themselves if still unsolved have their own threads where we can sleuth but we can discuss the media aspect here.
The reason for me making this post is this week we saw two different parental abduction cases- one involving 5-year-old Noah Clare and 14-year-old Amber Clare, who were allegedly abducted by Jacob Clare. All three were white. Although Jacob was charged with especially aggravated kidnapping, it's still unclear what that means, but an Amber Alert was issued. Noah and Amber were recovered in California and Noah was arrested.
The case made national news, it was posted constantly to In Pursuit's Facebook's groups, and it was somewhat semi-viral.
Meanwhile, we also had Robert Vicosa, who abducted his daughters Aaminah and Giana Vicosa after violently assaulting his ex-wife, attacking another woman, and going on the run along with Tia Bynum while seemingly on a robbery/carjacking spree. All four were African-American. No Amber Alert was given as police gave the fact the vehicle of interest was already found and Amber Alerts need a vehicle attached to the case as an excuse. There wasn't as much media publicity, and I didn't see any postings to In Pursuit. Sadly, this case had a much more tragic outcome as Vicosa and his daughters along with Amber and Giana were all found dead. And I'm sorry I can't help but wonder if maybe this case would have had a different outcome had an Amber Alert been issued anyway without that vehicle excuse along with increased publicity.
I'm not saying Noah and Amber weren't also in danger, but to me on paper this seemed like the even scarier and more concerning case for the children and not only the children but the general public as well since Robert Vicosa was attacking strangers, yet nowhere near the social and media publicity.
It also still isn't lost on me double-homicide suspect Brion (ironic first name considering) Reynolds abducted his two daughters the week we were all still searching for Gabby (once again I stress it's not Gabby's fault for any of this). They could have been killed, but the media neglected the case. I'm the forum-admin and it took me even a week to learn about the case because all the crime feed headlines I search for were buried in the Gabby Petito/Brian Laundrie news.
So yeah even though we've talked about it a lot on here, just like our mass shootings becoming an afterthought thread, it's become where it happens so frequently it needs its' own thread where we share any thoughts we may have.
