I normally would post this in the annoying social media comments thread but I felt this needed it's own thread.
In the past couple of days John Walsh has gone on various media to comment on the Gabby Petito case. He was in rare form, as although JW has never been shy to express his opinions, he criticized law enforcement and even the FBI (which is even more unusual) for their handling of Gabby's case and mistakes he felt they made. He then revealed he would air Brian Laundrie on the next episode of In Pursuit in the hopes of catching him.
Those of us on the forum knew what that likely meant- a quick 15 seconds of shame-type segment on the top of the show or somewhere in the episode. On social media, it was mentioned Laundrie would be aired, but they still mentioned the main segments full-length fugitive cases they'd also be airing. They also mentioned missing children who would be on the show.
Although I was expecting it, social media got into a frenzy when Brian Laundrie was aired for "only" 15 seconds last night.
Because these are not regular followers of In Pursuit they don't understand some aspects to the show:
1. The shows complete filming and segments way in advance.
2. This is not a breaking news show like AMW. AMW would film some segments in advance also but the actual episodes would be ultimately completed either a day or closer to actual airing to be as current as they can. In Pursuit wraps up before the season starts and all they can do is edit segments at the very last minute. In Pursuit is a crime documentary show a la The First 48, Disappeared. There is pre and post production and you can't put together a full-length reenactment segment in three days. AMW is/was a current event crime show with pre-taped re-enactments. So they would have been able to do like a local news-esque segment at least and In Pursuit isn't the type of show that has that ability.
JW never said this episode would only focus on Gabby and they wouldn't be able to do a show on just her in just three days.
Part of me understands the confusion and misunderstanding and in fairness I could see where they got the impression where Gabby's case would be talked about longer but there are so many things that piss me off about the criticisms.
-Saying the episode was a waste of time- its not a waste of time for George Smith's daughters, whose father was allegedly murdered by Margaret Smith and need justice like Gabby Petito's family needs justice. It's not a waste of time for the wife and children of Jigar Patel, who was allegedly murdered by John Panaligan, and need justice as well. It wasn't a waste of time for the family of James Mummer, who is missing and his family who desperately want to know he's safe. Or the family of Ruthie Kindness, a missing Native American woman which leads me to this:
I'm sorry as I know it's not her fault but the Gabby Petito case is unfortunately the classic example of "missing white woman" syndrome where an attractive young white female crime case becomes a media and online circus, and we know that if she had been black or Hispanic, the case would not be covered the way it is right now.
Sort of stealing a tweet I saw elsewhere but Gabby is important and deserves justice. Missing white woman syndrome is also real. The two do not need to be mutually exclusive.
A lot of these people upset about the airtime for Brian Laundrie, it's like they only care about Gabby and no other case. While I care about Gabby. I'm also horrified by the dashcam videos and the police not taking her situation seriously enough. I also see the photos and videos of her fun-loving nature and it saddens me to see her life ended so tragically. (Although I'm sure her family wants her to be remembered for how she lived- not how she died). However, I also care about other cases as well. If all you do is talk about her and complain In Pursuit didn't devote enough air time but you didn't retweet at the very least Native American missing person Ruthie Kidness's photo, I'm sorry but you're a hypocrite.
Meanwhile I'm probably ironically the only person in America upset In Pursuit cut out Daniel Wayne Wright, the 15 Seconds of Shame fugitive on the Discovery Plus version of last night's episode, in order to air Brian Laundrie. Don't get me wrong, Wright was wanted for "only" attempted murder of a family member in what was probably an isolated incident. Brian Laundrie, unofficially wanted for murder, knowing he has a target on his back, is in my opinion the more dangerous fugitive. My complaint isn't that they aired Laundrie as given a choice go with him obviously, just I felt they had time to air both Wright and Laundrie rather than having to sacrifice a fugitive who could have been caught off the show too if it was "only" going to be 15 seconds anyway.
In conclusion, it's not Gabby's fault the media is exploiting her case and we can't blame the victim. Gabby's life mattered. She deserves justice. In my opinion, Brian Laundrie is a piece of sh** and murderous scumbag and even those words are being kind. However there are other cases out there where loved ones of victims need help and all ethnicities genders and orientations also matter. Let's please just appreciate anyone willing to pitch in or help in any capacity and let's please acknowledge and be grateful for John Walsh pitching in at all in any capacity.
