Homicide detectives are searching for an 18-year-old man suspected in the stabbing death of another teen in Northeast Portland earlier this year, police said Wednesday.
Gerson Perez-Gil is suspected of killing Isaiah Jason Maza Jr., 19, about 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 31 near Northeast 120th Avenue and Couch Street soon after he left his mother’s home nearby.
His mother, Renee Maza, said she warned her son before he left.
“I don’t ever let my kids walk at night here,” she told The Oregonian/OregonLive. “It’s a bad area. I usually drive them. But I was cooking, and I said to him, ‘There are a lot of thugs out there. You know how I feel about walking.’ He said to me, ‘Mama, I’ll be safe. We are just getting chips. I love you.’’'
Maza’s 17-year-old girlfriend said they were headed to the market but “barely even made it a few feet” from his mother’s home when another teenager and his girlfriend confronted the couple.
After a brief exchange, the other teenager started punching Maza, and the two traded punches for about 10 to 15 seconds before the other teen stabbed Maza in the chest and he collapsed on the sidewalk, she said. She called 911 and applied pressure to his chest until police arrived, she said, before running to alert Maza’s mother.
Maza knew his attacker and had problems with him in the past, Renee Maza said.
“Isaiah was my world, my light and my breath,” she said. “He has been through so much in life you couldn’t even imagine. He would get kicked down and get right back up. … This is all too much.”
Investigators, along with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, issued an arrest warrant for Perez-Gil on suspicion of second degree murder, officials said.
Police said anyone who sees Perez-Gil should not approach him and instead call 911 immediately with his location, a description of his clothing and his direction of travel. Investigators encouraged anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Detective Shaye Samora at [email protected]/503-823-0768 or Detective Erik Kammerer at [email protected]/503-823-0762.
