Multiple 911 Calls Send Police To Murder Scene
In the early morning hours of Feb. 4, 2010, police dispatchers in Elgin, Ill., began receiving multiple calls reporting a shooting in the area.
Police rushed to the reported address. When they arrived, cops found a man lying on his side in his own driveway. They identified him as 28-year-old Hugo Navarro, a chef at a local hotel. He had suffered several gunshot wounds, including one to the head.
Officers on the scene knew the wounds were severe -- and they eventually proved fatal. Hugo died on the driveway before paramedics could save him.
Fortunately for law enforcement, Hugo's killer had been bold enough to show his face, and witnesses in the area were able to tell police exactly who to look for -- a man named Amilkar Antonio Caro.
According to witnesses, Caro, a 33-year-old driver for a local cab company called Taxi Leon, got out of the passenger's side of a green minivan holding a gun, then shot Hugo multiple times. Then, witnesses say he got back in the minivan and fled with an unknown man who was in the driver's seat.
"It doesn't seem like Hugo had any chance," Elgin P.D. Detective Heather Robinson said. "It looks like Caro just got out of the car and shot him."
Cops learned Caro had recently split from his girlfriend, an event they believe led to the events that unfolded that night.
The night of the murder, cops believe Caro was following his ex and monitoring her activities. At some point, police believe Caro followed her to Hugo's place -- and believing Hugo was trying to kindle a romantic flame with the woman, became infuriated. Cops believe Caro waited for his ex to leave, then struck with deadly precision.
Suspicious Vehicle Becomes Big Break In Case
Soon, the calls coming into dispatch were no longer to report a shooting, but to tip cops off to a break in the case.
Detectives say they received several calls about a suspicious vehicle parked a few blocks away from the crime scene.
When investigators arrived, they found a green minivan taxi that they were able to trace back to Taxi Leon -- Caro's employer -- and to Caro himself as the registered owner.
Thanks to evidence left behind in the van, cops were quickly able to arrest the alleged wheelman who they believed helped Caro flee the crime scene -- Rogelio Dominguez.
Cops learned the two suspects met while Caro was employed at a landscaping business six months earlier.
Cops Have Clues, Need Tips to Catch Accused Killer
So far, Caro has managed to stay on the run, but there are several things cops want tipsters should know in order to bring him to justice.
According to police, Caro's birth name is Salvador Avila, but he may be using several different aliases.
Cops say he has a tattoo reading "Jalisco" across his back -- and could be in the city of La Ribera in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. According to detectives, Caro might have some connections with the Zetas, a violent Mexican cartel.
At one point, cops say he was employed as a taxi cab driver and could gravitate toward that type of job.
Police warn that Caro should be considered armed and dangerous. They urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to call police and help them locate the accused killer.
Thoughts? The above was an archived AMW profile where Amilkar Caro is listed as a web-exclusive but I can swear he was on the first or second Lifetime episode and tv.com claims he was on the December 11th, 2010 episode on Fox.
What I find interesting is the back story on the real Amilkar Caro in the Chicago Tribune link I'll provide below. He is a career criminal who has served jail and penitentiary time for several violent felonies in Maryland and his native Puerto Rico. The real Amilkar Caro's ex-wife told Tribue reporters that Caro sold his identity through a middle man at least three times, making $2,000 per sale starting in 1999. She says he told her he provided the middle man with true, certified copies of his birth certificate and Social Security card — then got new documents by claiming that the originals had been lost or stolen.
Because of the fake identity, and I feel this may be a potential clue, is that the fake Caro (our fugitive) was able to convince others, including his ex-girlfriend, that he was from Puerto Rico.
Another clue I think might be potentially useful is Avila/Caro used the fake identity of Javier Pena in the 1990's.
Caro is probably still in Mexico in my opinion. But the jobs he's held, such as construction and being a taxi driver, are ones you can get anywhere in the United States which complicates matters.
Also complicating matters is Caro may be a possible member of Los Zetas according to his AMW archive, meaning it may be hard to track him down if there is any truth to this possibility and he's involved in the drug trade.
In any case, Avila, Caro, whatever his name is, needs to get caught so let's do whatever we can to find him!
