This week's planned exclusive case, that of 33-year old Jimmy Siders, is wanted not only for a violent robbery and murder, but also in my opinion may qualify as one of the most bizarre fugitive searches in New York City history after it resulted in a twist that no one saw coming.
In September of 2010, 21-year old Pace University student Max Moreno was gunned down on the 37th floor of his luxury apartment building in Manhattan's financial district. Moreno had just sold marijuana to a couple when two men burst into his apartment brandishing guns. According to police sources in the media, the men demanded money and when Moreno refused, they forced him into his bedroom where they shot and killed him. One of the two men, who was later identified as Raymond Rizzo, was also said to have beaten a witness and threatened to kill him as well.
Raymond Colon was later identified as the shooter who used Rizzo's gun. Rizzo was sentenced to up to 32 years in prison, while Colon is still awaiting trial. However, after the arrests of both men, police named a new suspect, Jimmy Siders, who they say set up the fatal robbery.
The search would soon take an extremely dramatic turn on the afternoon of June 12, 2013, when police thought they had possibly cornered Siders in a Chinatown apartment with his 50-year wheelchair bound mother, two children, one male, and one female. The occupants refused to open the door. New York media reported on it as a hostage situation.
After six hours, it turned out Siders was not inside, and his mother and others for whatever reasons just simply refused to answer the door.
Thoughts? I will use the Sid Wells murder as an example here. Parents all like to think of their children as completely innocent, but at their young ages, they can't always know for sure what's going on in their lives. Obviously, Max Moreno was caught up in illegal activity and it shouldn't be condoned. But neither should his murder. He was a beloved member of his fraternity who held a candlelight vigil for him and seemed to be well-liked by everyone he knew. Selling dope shouldn't have resulted in a violent death.
As for Siders, anyone's guess is as good as mine after that strange "hostage" incident. I read his mother calling him innocent in one article. And while that is technically true for the time being as it hasn't been proven in a court of law yet, it doesn't look good for you when you choose to hide from authorities. Siders needs to turn himself and defend himself in a court of law. Otherwise, it doesn't seem the cops will stop until they get the right apartment next time.
