NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — An unsolved crime is getting some renewed attention. North Charleston Police are still working to find out who killed a 74 year old woman nearly six months ago.
Mary Hayre was shot and killed in the Pinecrest Apartment complex on February 27.
NCPD investigators held a press conference Wednesday at the scene of the crime. Lieutenant Fred Hoose said they haven’t given up on the case — they’re still trying to figure out who killed Hayre and why.
“Her life ended right where we are standing,” said Hoose. “She was just out here picking up a cellphone. Her grandson had a sleepover the night before and left his cellphone.”
Family members joined police Wednesday calling for the community’s help.
“She was the glue that literally kept us together so you can imagine what happens when you lose the glue: Everything falls apart,” said her daughter-in-law LaTasha Hayre. “We’re missing her like crazy.”
Hoose said they believe someone out there knows who is responsible. Hayre was killed around 1:45 p.m. on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
“We know there were kids out here playing. There were multiple people out here when this occurred and we know the person with the vital information is probably listening to me right now and can probably see us,” said Hoose. "We want that person or those people who have that information to contact us. They can be anonymous, OK, but we’re missing a crucial piece of information that’s out there. We just need the community to help us.”
A suspect was arrested and charged in connection to Hayre’s murder back in March, but those charges were dropped in April after police say some additional evidence came through.
“If we stop fighting for her, then it was for nothing and we’re not going to let that happen. If the community know something, the community needs to step up. They always say, ‘It takes a village,’ but where’s the village because we’re looking for it,” Hayre said. “Keep us in your mind, your hearts, your thoughts and your prayers. I know one day something will come of this. I don’t know when, I can only hope soon.”
Those with information on the death of Mary Hayre can contact police or leave an anonymous tip by calling Crimestoppers of the Lowcountry at (843) 554-1111.
