Police believe one of the teenagers who broke out of Woodland Hills juvenile lockup in September was responsible for a Wednesday night shooting that hurt two students near the Tennessee State University campus.
De'Mario Fisher was announced as a suspect in the shooting at a Friday press conference in North Nashville.
Fisher is the only one of 32 juveniles who is is still at large after a Sept. 2 breakout from Woodland Hills. That escape was the first of three major incidents at Woodland Hills in September. There also was a riot in the yard and another breakout in which 13 teens escaped.
Fisher was added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's list of the 10 most wanted suspects in the state earlier this month. Authorities have said he is armed and dangerous.
In the campus shooting, two female students were returning to campus from a nearby Wendy's restaurant when they were accosted at 9:30 p.m. near the corner of 31st Avenue North and John Merritt Boulevard, according to Anthony Carter, deputy chief of police at TSU.
There was a brief struggle over a bookbag, according to Metro police. The suspect allegedly put one of the students in a headlock, threw her to the ground and shot her with a pistol multiple times.
This student, who police say is 18 years old, was shot once in the shoulder, once in the thigh and once in the abdomen, said TSU President Glenda Glover.
The second student didn't immediately realize it, but she was grazed by a bullet.
Campus officials agreed to step up security in light of the shootings.
Fisher, who turned 18 today, has been charged with aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and unlawful gun possession.
