PRESCOTT VALLEY - On Christmas Eve 1998, about 6 p.m., Candice Adamson was killed in a hit-and-run collision in Prescott Valley, and police have never found the driver who struck her truck, got out of theirs and ran from the incident, according to former PV police Det. Ed Bills, who was at the scene 15 years ago.
Adamson, 33, was a passenger in a full-size, extended cab pickup driven by her husband, Bills said, and their two children, ages 5 and 12, were in the back seat.
The pickup was traveling north on Glassford Hill Road when it was struck head-on by another pickup that had crossed the centerline near Spouse Drive, in an apparent attempt to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone. At the time, Glassford Hill was a much smaller, two-lane road.
Adamson died, and the other three family members were treated and released from the hospital.
Police have known for years a man named Manuel Dera, then 34 years old, drove the pickup that caused the crash; a passenger in his truck was trapped in the wreckage and told officers who it was, Bills said.
Dera "is believed to have fled to Mexico," Bills said, and police have been searching for him since.
"There's currently an active warrant for his arrest," Bills added.
Although authorities think he's living in Mexico, they said he comes to the U.S regularly. Dera, a Mexican male, is 5'9" and weighs about 160 pounds. He once lived on Pima Drive in Prescott Valley.
Dera also uses the names of Manuel Dera-Baltazar or Manuel Baltazar-Dera.
There have been attempts to ask for the public's help, both through Yavapai Silent Witness and the Catch-22 program, but no one has come forward with information yet.
Anyone who may be able to help locate Dera can still make an anonymous call to Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.
Thoughts? Unfortunately,AMW's archive no longer has Dera's (on the site he was listed as Dera-Baltazar) profile available but thankfully this new article on an old case (which is always great when it happens), came out a week ago and I found it the other day. I have no idea if this was a web-exclusive or was on AMW but what I do know is 16 years is way too long for someone who allegedly fled like a coward. Too many lives have been destroyed by Dera's careless actions and it's never too late for justice.
