A furious manhunt is underway in the suburbs north of Chicago for an “armed and extremely dangerous” ex-military man who opened fire on three sheriff’s deputies, seriously injuring one.
Cops responded to the Holiday Hills home of Scott B. Peters, 52, around 1:30 a.m. Thursday after a reported domestic dispute. Once on scene, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren says Peters unloaded several rounds through the door of the home, some 50 miles northwest of Chicago, then opened the door and continued firing, the Chicago Tribune reported.
A female officer, a 12-year veteran, was shot in the leg and is in stable condition, while a male deputy, on the force for seven years, was hit in the leg and abdomen and left in serious but stable condition, Nygren said.
The third deputy returned fire, though it’s unclear if Peters was wounded. His wife and daughter were able to safely escape the home, according to the newspaper.
Authorities were going door-to-door in their search for the veteran.
“At this time we do not know where the offender is,” Nygren told reporters. “It’s an evolving situation.”
Nearby schools were put on lockdown as authorities scoured the neighborhood with SWAT teams and vehicles. Neighbors were kept from returning home as the community turned into a war zone, residents said.
“It was horrible,” Nancy Bulava, 53, told the Tribune. “I was scared to death.”
Cops described Peters as a white man with blond hair and blue eyes standing 5-foot-10-inches tall and approximately 200 pounds. He faces charges of attempt murder and aggravated battery with a firearm.
