BROCKTON — A man being actively sought in connection with an October 2020 fatal shooting in the city is now considered one of the state's most wanted suspects.
Marvin A. Veiga Jr., 32, who prosecutors say is wanted for the Oct. 13, 2020, murder of Manuel Duarte on Belmont Avenue in Brockton, was one of five suspects added to Massachusetts State Police's Most Wanted fugitives list on Thursday.
“We need to find these violent men for two reasons. First, we seek justice for their victims and their victims’ families," State Police Colonel Christopher Mason said.
These men have taken the lives of others or have assaulted victims in ways that cause lasting physical or emotional damage, leaving holes in families and physical or emotional wounds that may never heal. They need to be brought to justice."
State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County district attorney's office obtained an arrest warrant charging Veiga with murder on March 6. A murder warrant was also obtained for a second suspect, 29-year-old Takari Elliot, who was arrested, arraigned and is being held without bail, but prosecutors said Veiga was actively being sought.
The men are facing charges in connection with Duarte's murder, which occurred about 7:35 p.m. on Oct. 13, 2020, outside 94 Belmont Ave. Officers responded that evening after ShotSpotter, the city's electronic gunfire detection system, alerted police to 10 gunshots. Police also received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting.
Duarte was found at the scene "suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body," the DA's office said. Prosecutors say three friends attempted to render aid to him after he was shot and before he was taken by ambulance to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, where he died.
"The ensuing investigation by Brockton and State Police Detectives identified VEIGA and a second man as the assailants, and arrest warrants were obtained for them," Veiga's wanted poster, issued by State Police, states. "The second suspect was quickly arrested, but VEIGA remains at large."
In addition to a charge of murder, Veiga is wanted for illegally carrying a loaded firearm, a second offense of illegally carrying a loaded firearm, assault and battery with a firearm and committing a firearm violation while having a prior conviction for drugs or violent crime.
"He has a lengthy history of violence, including a previous armed confrontation with Boston Police and prior convictions for assault and battery on a police officer and possession a large capacity firearm," the wanted poster states.
Veiga is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds, according to State Police. He has black hair and brown eyes.
"He has numerous tattoos, including a cross under the corner of his right eye and a tear drop under the corner of his left eye, a cross on his right chest, the letters KC on his neck, and additional ink on his arms and left lower leg," the wanted poster states. "VEIGA, who is considered armed and dangerous, has extensive ties to Boston."
Veiga and Elliot were both indicted on March 8 — the same day Elliot was arraigned in Brockton District Court — by a Plymouth County grand jury with one count each of murder, a subsequent offense of illegally carrying a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm and a firearm violation under the under the Armed Career Criminal Statute.
