Rafael Rodriguez is wanted in connection with the homicide of 22-year old Eriverto Mejia. Eriverto was a gang member who flashed a gang sign at a passing vehicle. Rafael, who was in that vehicle, got out and shouted his own gang's slogan. Authorities say that Rafael then took out a laser-sighted handgun and allegedly shot Eriverto. Eriverto fell to the pavement, and was then shot several more times while he was wounded. Eriverto died from his injuries.
In addition, Rafael is wanted for questioning in a 1997 homicide investigation. In that incident, two gang members were shot, one fatally.
On August 20, 2009, an Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution warrant was issued for Rafael Rodriguez in the Northern District of Illinois. The investigation determined that Rafael may be hiding in his parent's native Mexico with relatives.

Thoughts? As of today, February 17, 2021, the UFAP warrant for Rafael Rodriguez in PACER is still active and has not been closed/dismissed without prejudice.
As with similar cases, we need to finally get justice for the family of Eriverto Mejia. Eriverto's gang involvement does not take away from the fact that he is the victim of an unresolved homicide. Additionally, Rafael's arrest could at the very least help in the investigation of the 1997 homicide, if not solve it completely.
