Charles “Chuck” Porter Jr. spent three years building his new home.
He was shot and killed the day before he was to move in, said his sister, Crystal Porter.
The date was Sept. 26, 1993. Sometimes it feels like yesterday, Crystal said, and other times it feels more like a hundred years ago.
The investigation into her brother’s murder is the oldest unsolved case in Cleveland County, officials say.
Over the last 21 years, Crystal and her mother, Juanita, have kept the case in the public’s eye one way or another. They contact The Star every year on the anniversary of his death, and Crystal gathered letters from 48 states and five countries to have her brother’s story told on “America’s Most Wanted” in 1995.
‘I want the case solved’
Her mother has Alzheimer’s now, so Crystal is doing all she can to help bring about justice in her brother’s case.
“I know somebody has to know something somewhere. I want the case solved,” she said. “I’m just not going to shut up. He was my older brother. If it was me, I know he wouldn’t stop until he got some answers.”
Her father died eight years ago and her grandparents are gone, too.
“He was my only sibling,” she said.
Her voice cracks with emotion as her eyes fill with tears.
“There’s no one ever going to be any closer to you than a sibling,” she said.
Sgt. Mark Craig in the criminal investigations division of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office said there is nothing new in the case.
“We are hoping that generating more press will help somebody remember something,” he said. “We have exhausted most of the leads we have and are hoping to generate some new ones.”
The case
The known facts of the Chuck Porter case are few.
Robbery is the motive behind the shooting, but law enforcement officers won’t say if anything had been taken from Porter that night at the I-85 rest stop where he worked.
Two men were seen entering the building by several witnesses and, shortly after, another custodian heard several pops, “like a breaker taking off” while cleaning the women’s restroom, according to the original story in The Star.
When the woman went to investigate, she found Porter’s body stuffed inside the closet, his hands bound with a cord.
Sketches made days after the murder showed one man with a flat top-style haircut and the other with a ball cap worn backward.
Porter, who had been working for the N.C. Department of Transportation, was a custodian at the rest stop and had been called in to work that Sunday morning.
In the days following, law enforcement officers from several agencies worked the case, but no arrests were made.
